Shakes the Clown (Belmont Inn)

In my weekly “looking for funny images related to the theme quest, I remembered this classic 80s (90s?) comedy — Shakes the Clown. Looking at the tagline, I wonder, how was Bad Santa ever green lit — isn’t it just a blatant ripoff of this film, swapping Santa for the clown?

Well, there were no rip offs last night, just good, clean quizzing, and five rounds of it, no less. We had a hoard of quizzers at Portland’s wildest bar trivia for the Thursday Throwdown. And it was a total nerdfest for the ages — SO MANY SHAKESPEARIAN NERDS! But I monologued the heck out of them, so they all behaved.

We also had SO MANY TEAMS in the challenge round. Team C Average was in first place through four rounds, and they managed to hold on for the win, but they had to be scared, because there was a lot of competition.

And as a result of their victory, they’ve climbed back ontop of the Belmont Steak Standings. Will they hold on? There’s a lot of challengers this season. Time will only tell!

Each season, on the Solstices and the Equinoxes, Quizmaster JPP’s venues (Shanahan’s Pub and Grill in Vancouver, The Space Room Lounge on Hawthorne, and at The Belmont Inn on Belmont) break into their own in-house competitions, augmenting the weekly Pub Quiz fare with quarterly standings competitions to prove who is the best of the bunch.

The spoils are a mix of gift certificates, treats, and an entire season of tributes paid to you by your peers. The rules are quite simple, and can be found here.

The trash talking is a bit more complex, and can be found here.

And the updated standings, which can be viewed in detail here, are below.

Take a Bow

Well it wasn’t a Midsummer Night’s Dream, but we had a fun group of quizzers.

Yahtzee was bound and determined to get the bingo and that they did. The bingo bonus ensured their early lead with Shakes Beer in 2nd and Bringing Up the Rear in 3rd.

Who Am I? was a fun round. We got through it with lots of laughs and Yahtzee did pretty well. They remained in the lead with a healthy score. Shakes Beer stayed firmly in 2nd place and Bringing Up the Rear did just that. We went over the handouts and found that the teams don’t really know who played Hamlet in various movies. The suffix handout went over really well. Everyone held their place and we moved into the final round.

The wagers were placed and the category was picked. I posed the question, but nobody knew the answer. The winning came down to the betting….. Yahtzee! took the big win!! Shakes Beer was in 2nd and Bringing Up the Rear took 3rd.

We had a fun night!!

Top Dogs

Thank you, 21st Avenue Bar and Grill!!

The 2nd Quarter standings:

14 points: To Be Determined

13 points: Shakes Beer

6 points: Questionable Meth-Heads

4 points: Burke Majority

3 points: Bringing Up the Rear

1 point: NKOTB, The Girls, The Lewsers

How Art Thou Quizzing Skills?

Ah yes, Shakespeare, the Bard, Big Willie Shakes — such was the theme of this week’s pub quiz at the Big Time Brewing Co. in Seattle, and the sight of another fun week of questioning, answering, eating and drinking.

We had the usual fun, even with such a heady topic. And thankfully no young lovers offed themselves during the quiz either. Nor was anybody baked into pies (at least that I’m aware of), though plenty of pizzas were consumed.

Like a bad open mic night, team members even recited some of Shakespeare’s sonnets for bonus points, which was pretty amusing, though probably more so to the bar patrons who wandered back to use the bathroom only to discover people reading Shakespeare in the back room — not something you see everyday at your neighborhood pub.

When the scores were tallied and the sonnets read, it was the Never Nudes who came out on top, and who have been leading the pack in the current standings game, which I promised I’d tally this week. But first, here are the Never Nudes after their victory, which you could probably see much better if my stupid camera flash felt like working. Just pretend you were really drunk:

Top 3 teams so far:

Never Nudes: 11
Old Fashioneds: 9
Golden Snitch: 4

Shakes in Space… (Space Room)

What glorious mayhem at the Space Room last night! It turned out the Thirsty Lion was refinishing their floors, so we had a slew of refugee quizzers invading Hawthorne’s Hottest bar trivia night. With all the tables packed, we had to double up some teams to accommodate everyone. I guess people love their Shakespeare.

The top five scores got a pass into the challenge round, and what a showdown it was! Three teams tied for fifth place, which means we actually had SEVEN squads in the finals.

And when it came to the last question, we had to figure it out down to the letter! The question was “What was the name of the girl that Romeo was pining for before he saw Juliet.” Some teams answered Rosalind, some Rosalyn, others, Rosalie — but Captain is Parking sounded it out and went through the rhymes to remember it was Rosaline (because it rhymes with “Mine”). So they took home the top prize and all the pride. Great job, Captain and Co!

Everybody Plays the Fool (Shanahan’s)

I’d like to write this post in iambic pentameter, but truth be told, I can’t be arsed. It’s tough enough to write these blogs as it is sometimes, and having to stick to the rules of the writing road might drive me to drink my bottle of ink.

Lovely time as always north of the border, for a Shakes-tastic Shakespeare themed quiz. We had comedy. We had tragedy. We had shaney fries. And in the end we had three teams in the challenge Round. The Stumbling Drunks were far and away the victors after four rounds, with their foils That’s What She Said and Team Cosmo on their heals. Cosmo has made it into every single Challenge Round they’ve played thus far — it’s only a matter of time before they’re taking home first place. But that time will have to be another day, since the Drunks locked this one up, with TWSS netting runners up honors.

I don’t know if you guys heard me, but you really need to beat the Stumbling Drunks, okay? Here’s your scores below. Get on it, will ya!?

Trip on thy sword, thou gorbellied rump-fed pumpion!

Forsooth, Shakespeare insults are fun

And so was pub quiz last night! But Hood River may not have as many bard’s fans as I had anticipated, so blessed art thou getting thyselves to the quizzery so dutifully.

Players at the Horse & Hound may be happy to know that bonus points for bringing in new people has been reinstated! And as an added bonus for the bonus, everyone is considered a ‘new player’ until they sign the guest book, so you can get points for yourself even if you’re not very new to the game at all.

Round 1′s bingo saw some close standings, but Pros not Hos pulled ahead with a continuing streak on the 20 point bingo bonus win and stayed ahead until the final round. With only five teams I let everyone get a shot in the final round and the final challenge question- inordinately difficult as always I’m afraid.

Flower Children came in third, My Precious came in second, and Pros not Hos were bequeathed the win just a 1 point lead over second place with 243 points! Congrats!

And lo, here be the standings:
Symbi-1
Grumplestiltskin-1
Dick Cheney stole my heart-1
Willie Nillies-2
Team Work-2
WTF-2
George/Flower Children-3
Totes amazeballs-3
Yoko Onno’s evil bandkilling dirty black jockstrap-6
At least we’re not last-12
Sandbar Developers-13
Pros not hos-17
My Precious-19

Now it’s getting close!
See you next week quizzers!

Fare thee well! and if for ever, Still for ever, fare thee well

The Course of True Love Never Did Run Smooth

This was the quiz that almost wasn’t. J

We had a few players that made up 2 teams, then one more team jumped up to join in the fun. Bingo got to the very end, to the very last question, before Anagram This! scored the points. Phew! Yahtzee was in 2nd and Shauna’s Shits were in 3rd.

Round 2 was By the Numbers. Yahtzee was on their game for this round. Then Yahtzee and Anagram This! came up and read their sonnets, earning them both some bonus points. Anagram kept their lead and we moved on to the handouts.

The handouts really challenged the teams. Anagram did decently on the Shakespeare Quotes. They kept their lead and Shauna’s Shits bowed out.

The wagers were placed and both teams knew the answer! Yahtzee took the win as they wagered the most points!!

Way to go teams!!!!

The food here at the Mark is amazing!! The staff is totally attentive!!

Come check it out next Wednesday!

Wherefore art thou?

The quiz room was quiet. The quizzers were very studious and concentrating.

The bingo round was a tough one. The teams were ready to give it a go, though. Clown Punchers took the bingo win and sat in 1st place with Hangover and a Pineapple behind them. Po was in very close 3rd with newcomers DeNati in 4th. Newcomer Captain Wonderful was in 5th with Beer Whores in last place.

DeNati and CP had some Arrogance, which was perfect for the 2nd round. The CP kept their lead as did Hangover. Po went for the added 11 bonus points, putting themselves just 1 point under Hangover. DeNati was next and the Beer Whores bowed out.

Hangover and DeNati knew their Vampires. Sadly, nobody did too well on the

Shakespearean insults handout. When all was said and done, them Clown Punchers were in 1st place with Hangover in 2nd and DaNati was in 3rd.

I took in the wagers and then asked the question. Everybody guessed wrong. So…it came down to the smart wagering of these quizzers. The Clown Punchers take the WIN!!!! Hangover and a Pineapple took 2nd, leaving De Nati in 3rd. Way to go teams!!

Hear Ye, hear ye! We are the winners!

This was a fun night!

Til Next Tuesday….

Wendy =)

Here are the Top of the Mountain standings for the 2nd quarter:

12 points: Hangover & A Pineapple, Electric Sex Pants

7 points: Slowly Evolving

3 points: Wild Card, Wizard

2 points: Black Sabbatical, Po

1 points: Registered Guy, Beer Whores, Captain Wonderful

Bill Shakespeare versus The Boss

Upon arriving to the Brit in Downtown San Jose, I noticed that the place was packed with people. I just figured that people heard that this weeks trivia theme was Bill Shakespeare and everyone wanted a piece of the action. Instead, I find out that the masses had come out in droves to hear some guy named Bruce Springsteen play down the street at HP Pavilion. Okay, I don’t know who this Bruce guy is trying to steal the thunder of the greatest playwright, poets, and writers of all time. This Springsteen character claims to be a singer, songwriter, and performer; okay, well who isn’t that. And on top of that he hails from Jersey. He probably hangs out with Snooki, J-Woww, and Pauly D, with a name like The Boss. Hey, Bruce, there is only one Boss and that is the Big Boss Man who would have no problem taking his nightclub and serving his own brand of justice upon your flash-in-the-pan Jersey loving butt. Just saying.

Anyway, I doubt that in the many years to come that Springsteen will have classes devoted to him, pilgrimages from fans to Jersey or days and festivals in his honor like Bill Shakespeare has; a man that died nearly 400 years ago. Sorry, th tale of the tape never lives.

Moving on Willy Wonka styles, we saw another Brit Battle go down to the Challenge Round question. After playing the Game of Arrogance, I suppose all our teams were not only feeling arrogant, but like river boat gamblers who make their own beef jerky and leave the seat up because they are honey badgers and honey badgers don’t care at all. So, everyone is geeked up for the final question and when it comes out, the looks on their faces looked like they were just told that instead of trivia night that tonight’s festivities would be Bruce Springsteen and the E street Band. We get it Bruce, you danced in the dark with Courtney Cox, but so did David Arquette, so I would call that a minus in my book. Never heard of Bill Shakespeare taking on grenades like you people from Jersey do.

Oh, so To Pee or Not Pee won based on not knowing the final answer, but keeping some of their well deserved points. Take that Bruce and long live Shakespeare.
