So that’s a strange Phil Collins picture. And if it was an isolated incident, I probably wouldn’t even bring it up except for the fact that we (okay I) made fun of Phil a lot in our 80s Themed quiz last night. But then I found this:

We’ve got two now! It’s an epidemic! Phil Collins is multiplying by mitosis!
ARGHHH…
Well, let’s set aside the panic for a bit and talk about last night’s awesome quiz at Space Room. The hottest quiz on Hawthorne was hoppin’ with a full house of hungry quizzers and a rollicking Name That Tune Round 2. Lots of new teams and irregular veterans filling the seats here, and last night’s top prize went on to Thistle Und Shamrock, who’s feisty wagering beat out Cowboy Banana and Those Meddling Kids.
That makes Thistle a contender in the Space Room Saucer — just check out how high they’ve climbed in the standings!
****************************************************
Each season, on the Solstices and the Equinoxes, Quizmaster JPP’s venues (Shanahan’s Pub and Grill in Vancouver, The Space Room Lounge on Hawthorne, and at The Belmont Inn on Belmont) break into their own in-house competitions, augmenting the weekly Pub Quiz fare with quarterly standings competitions to prove who is the best of the bunch.
The spoils are a mix of gift certificates, treats, and an entire season of tributes paid to you by your peers. The rules are quite simple, and can be found here.
The trash talking is a bit more complex, and can be found here.
And the updated standings, which can be viewed in detail here, are below.

So, without further ado, here are the current Top Tens:

We had a totally retro Wednesday night at the Big Time Brewing Co. this week, as teams packed the house to compete in a 1980′s themed quiz. Though a few players got decked out in their favorite garb from the decade, more simply donned a favorite T-shirt from the era, which was also fun to see.
This week’s dozen teams did great on the bingo round, and scores were pretty high… at least for until the Name That Tune round. Whenever we have a Name That Tune game, the round seems to separate the wheat from the chafe so to speak. Last night’s round, which focused on all songs from the 80s, was pretty tough for everybody. Everybody but the The Unthinkables, who dominated the round, correctly identifying nearly every song as well as nailing the bonus points.
And The Unkthinkables were able to hold on to that lead all the way to finals, where they were also the only team to correctly answer the final question, giving them the win and this week’s sizable cash prize. Here they are, mostly in the dark and out of focus thanks to my phone’s flash not going off.

And here are the top teams in our standings game so far:
The Old Fashioneds: 10
Not a Banana Baton: 8
Unthinkables: 5
Golden Snitch: 4
High Five City: 3
See you all next week!

80′s pop is so great. Maybe better than 90′s, and definitely better than the 00′s
We had a grand celebration of 80′s tunes, tv, and more at the Horse and Hound last night. Quizzers brought their band shirts, leather jackets, fingerless gloves, and swatch watches to bat for bonus points and cred.
Not to be left out of the loop by the older crowd, Get Bent took round 1′s bingo bonus points, but dropped out of the running during round 2′s Name That Tune- which stumped even veteran 80′s music listeners with on-the-tip-of-your-tongue song titles and memorable choruses. (Someone missed Elton John’s ‘I’m still standing’? No way!)
Chocula took the lead with their extreme knowledge of 80′s tunes, 80′s sitcoms, and female authors after round 2 and handouts.
In the final round it came to Chocula, My Precious, and Sandbar devs but no one could quite remember the album ‘Video killed the Radio Star’ is from so the lowest wager took the majority of the night’s $75 pot.
And that lowest wager came frooom…The Sandbar Developers!

Congrats on the win, and kudos for the 80′s spirit Sandbar Developers.

Wow! We had our best night ever at Billy’s bar in Beaverton last night. Everyone was juiced up for an 80′s themed quiz. Round 1 was won by Four ponies and a cowboy (Beer Whores). Round 2 was a name that tune round which brought back many memories of a time when bad haircuts, parachute pants, and rubik’s cubes were all the rage. Oh, and don’t forget Cabbage patch kids. Aw but I digress. This round was owned by Five Clown Punchers. The final round consisted of Four Ponies, Unforgettable Fire, & Five Clown Punchers. If you knew that Kristen Shepard shot JR then you would have been in the winners circle. Great job Unforgettable Fire!
Until next time!

Oh man, did we have a rocking’ 80′s-themed quiz in Vancouver, or what!? It really shouldn’t be all that surprising — the dream of the 80′s is still alive in Vancouvria, anyway… right comrades?
We had a PACKED house full of new teams and veteran quizzers alike. It wasn’t just the 80s theme that pulled them in, but rather an unquenchable passion for pub quizzery in general. I think we’ve got some new regulars up north, which should make Vancouvers ONLY quiz the place to be on Tuesday nights.
Five teams fought their way into the Challenge Round, with The Stumbling Drunks breaking into an early lead, but fading late. As usual, they had Off Nightly and the Lollipop Guild to contend with, but a smaller-than-usual Mno team turned out, and Team Shanahan’s brought in some ringers to make it interesting.
And it was INDEED interesting, since they managed to score second place (which means their $52 prize will get rolled into next week’s quiz!), the Mnos came up with second place, and OFF NIGHTLY WON IT! That’s right, contractually I’m required to say this: No one can beat Off Nightly!
That makes the standings interesting — they are below. And it makes next week all the more exciting. You better be there to believe it. See you then, nerdos!

Check it out:

It’s hard to see, but the Side-Ponytail and the Big Puffy really sell it!

It’s Rick Astley! /scream
What an awesome night! I really do have this hankering to do an all-80′s movie marathon now. Goonies, Raiders, Blade Runner, Empire, Full Metal Jacket, Terminator, Die Hard, Princess Bride, Fast Times, Breakfast Club, Ferris Bueller’s, Big, ummmmm alright that’s all I can think of.
But back to the quiz! Congratulations to team Vince Neil’s Windshield for their first place win!

I told Mark he looked like he was giving me an offer I couldn’t refuse.
See what happens when you guys come back and play? :D I’d like to say that’s why you won, but it was all you guys.
In second place, team Bullet Ants took home 2nd place money prize, with team Ped Heads in third place. Special mention to our two 1-person teams, who did quite well actually: The Beardyman & The Sisters of Merdre.
Until next week peeps! Hopefully you were as inspired as I was by all the 80′s music! Can’t wait for more tonight at The Thirsty Lion quiz =)

Wake Me Up before you go-go on that Journey as a Foreigner with your Motley Crue and scream Like A Virgin as you wish to be Jessie’s Girl.
The 80s crews were here, ready to quiz, Livin’ On a Prayer! Biddy’s was hopping!
The 80s was a great topic for pretty much everyone in the house! Kitty Glitter scooped up the bingo win and pocketed the bonus points. At the bottom of this round, Kitty Glitter was in 1st, Soylent Green was in 2nd with Borg 9 in a close 3rd and just 1 point separating them from Darwin Barney.
Name That Tune was a bitchin’ round! Soylent Green got them all correct!! They took over the 1st place reign with Kitty Glitter in 2nd, Borg 9 in 3rd. Crazy 8s was gaining on them with only 3 points to tie.
The handouts were helpful to many, including Crazy 8s. Soylent Green got all of the Teen 80s movies correct!! The top 3 wound up being Soylent Green, Borg 9 and Crazy 8s! Kitty Glitter slipped into 4th.
Soylent Green picked the category, everyone made their wagers and the question was asked. Only Borg 9 knew the answer so they took 1st place! Soylent was in 2nd and Crazy 8s was more than thrilled to be in 3rd!

Totally Tubular!
Biddy’s was a blast!!!!!
Here are the 1st Quarter Standings!
11 points Borg 9
10 points: Kitty Glitter
7 points: Boba Steph
5 points:, Black Sabbatical, Darwin Barney
4 points: Ah Shit!, Soylent Green
2 points: Crazy 8s
1 point: Johnny Mullet, Boy Fight!
See you next Tuesday!!!!

The San Jose Britannia Arms in Downtown rocked and rolled to its first ever Pub Quiz Challenge. The beer flowed like wine and the pub quiz contestants flocked like the seagulls of Capastrano. The contestants were primed and ready for 80′s night and they did not disappoint with Jordan high tops, leg warmers, and a break dance contest. Okay, I made that last part up, but I did encourage each team to battle for an extra 5 points. A guy can dream that an impromptu, albeit coerced, dance battle erupts.
In a five team battle royal for the inaugural Pub Quiz Belt, it was a team of Divas that reigned supreme. This pack of bar room hooligans took bar knowledge to another level with phenomenal 80′s knowledge. The Divas rode the momentum of caviar dreams and poppin’ bottles fantasies into the final round that almost saw all they had won dashed away. However, the night was theirs and they finished off a clean sweep to defend their turf, but not before laying out this challenge to all who come after their belt, “We will put anyone in our path in a body bag. This is our Dojo!” And for one night it was. Viva La Sharks!!!

Question: What is the lowest point in America?
Answer: Kirstie Alley… wait… no… Death Valley! They rhyme, and Kirstie was the answer to the previous question — you can see how I’d get confused.
In fact, confusion reigned supreme at The Belmont last night, as I made my triumphant return to the Thursday Throwdown. First question of the night was, “Wait, where’s Jeremy, you know the nice guy who’s been here the last couple weeks?” And then the second question, “Why are you swearing at us and hurling insults our way?”
It was great to be back in Belmont’s sweet loving arms, actually. Fierce competition reigned again, and this time we had three teams in the Challenge Round with “The Wildcatters” out for blood, and getting it — going rail to rail in first place on the night. They beat out the currently-reigning Belmont Steak Champs, “Team C Average” for first place on the evening, with “Monkey Recall” rounding out the finals teams.
Back in the swing next week, fo sho, so make sure you’re there. We’lre going to have great prizes from New Belgium and some other treats to boot — so see you there and then!

Everyone seemed to survive the snow storm and came out to quiz!
We had a pretty full house and there were even newbies!
Bingo was a tough round tonight. The newbies displayed their greenness by shouting out Bingo while I was still reading questions; J Such a cute young team, that KJAMNN. We only had 2 questions left before Precious Blood hollered out Bingo! They took an early lead with To Be Determined was in 2nd and My Wife Can’t Wrestle, But You Should See Her Box was in 3rd.Yahtzee was in a close 4th with Not Yet and KJAMNN right behind. Baby Beluga and Doodle Bears tied for last place.
By The Numbers was good to Yahtzee. I almost couldn’t continue reading cuz I was laughing so hard as I read an answer and one guy on the newbie team, KJAMNN, shoved his teammate when he heard that the answer he had given was correct (the team overruled and went with an alternative answer). The shove knocked the teammate over, chair and all. This was after My Wife Can’t Wrestle practically took the bench apart and almost lost a teammate behind there all to retrieve a lip gloss (one of their teammates thought for sure that her car key was back there, only to find it in her pocket while Stephanie dangled behind the bench). LMAO!!
Precious Blood held steady in 1st while Yahtzee bumped to 2nd and TBD nudged My Wife Can’t Wrestle out of 3rd. Baby Beluga and Doodle Bears snuggled up in last.
Most of the teams fared well on the Celebrity Mug Shots handout…KJAMNN and Yahtzee only missed 1 each! Dream Songs went over well for the players, too. Precious Blood stayed in 1st with Yahtzee in 2nd while TBD stayed in 3rd by 5 points over My Wife Can’t Wrestle. Not Yet slipped to the very bottom just under Baby Beluga who was just under Doodle Bears.
Everyone placed their wagers and the final question was asked. Precious Blood and Yahtzee knew the answer and the wagering left Precious Blood with the win! Yahtzee came in 2nd and TBD made 3rd place.
Really fun night with lots of entertaining quizzers!

In a dreamlike state
Always a good time! Thank you, 21st Avenue Bar and Grill!!
Here’s the belated pic of the 4th Quarter winners, Yahtzee!, and their Golden Nerd award

Pride!!
The 1st Quarter standings:
14 points: To Be Determined
10 points: Precious Blood
5 points: Yahtzee!
3 points: My Wife Can’t Wrestle, But You Should See Her Box
