It was all mystical tonight. Who made everyone disappear?? We had a few teams and the quiz was shaping up to be fun.

Royal Kraken came back to play for the first time in a long time. They did so with a vengeance! They scooped up the bingo bonus points and lead the pack with an early lead. To Be Determined was in 2^nd, Boba Steph was in 3^rd and My Wife Can’t Wrestle But You Should See Her Box was on the bottom of the heap.

The Game of Arrogance brought out the arrogance/confidence in the teams; to some of their detriment. TBD was pretty level headed and wound up taking the 1^st place slot after round 2. Royal Kraken moved to 2^nd while Boba Steph and My Wife Can’t Wrestle remained at the bottom.

Boba Steph knew their magicians so they did pretty well on that handout. TBD was keen on matching the artists with the albums so they rocked that handout. After this round, TBD held their ground in 1^st place. We moved on to the final round.

TBD picked the category. Wagers were made. I asked the final question and everyone submitted their answers. Everyone knew who the Mormon angel was so it came down to the wagers. Royal Kraken took the first place win with TBD in 2^nd and Boba Steph came in 3^rd.

Most everyone that showed up to last night’s quiz brought their tokens of faith, superstition, and luck (or showed me their keys and said a key chain was lucky. But luck is a magic that can enchant any object, including underwear, so who am I to deny anyone?) for bonus points, hoping it’d give them the boost necessary to make finals or win the game, and it did indeed come heavily into play in terms of points.

A splinter team merged with Count Chocula’s Diry Black Jock Strap, and they became a powerhouse of knowledge- racing to first for the final round and holding it by a miraculous /1/ point away from tying with second placers ‘My Precious’, and the Sandbar Developers sunk by high wagers and obscure dates important to Protestants and the challenge question for third place.

I’ll be honest… I don’t even know what’s going on in that picture. But I’m just going to leave it there, and let it burn into your computer monitor.

WOAH NELLY, did we have another packed house of awesome quizzers last night at the Hottest Quiz on Hawthorne. We had asses in every chair, and plates on every table, bringing in extras (tables, not asses) to accommodate all the great teams we had last night.

SIX teams made it into the Challenge Round, with Those Meddling Kids leading the way through four rounds. Thistle and Shamrock and the Shitty Beetles made their way to the quiz this week, busting into the challenge round in their usual impressive fashion. They were there to do battle with reigning champs House of no Future, but two new teams cracked the top spots too, with Xerces and See You Leder Hosen also making the finals.

In the end though, “Those Meddling Kids” won the night, retaking first place in the Space Room Saucer, in the process. As for Sister Act 2: Electric Boogaloo — you’ll have to come down and play the best Wednesday Night quiz in town, if you want to be a part of that inside joke. You won’t regret it!

Who made all the crowds magically appear at Shanahan’s these past two weeks? Maybe it was Gob, but it wasn’t a trick — A trick is something a whore does for money…. Or cocaine!

But the crowds held up at the Tuesday Tussle, Vancouver’s only Pub Quiz — maybe they were after Shanahan’s take of last week’s quiz, a cool $52 that got rolled over to this week’s take. The Lemon Party, soon to disband, sadly, came roaring out of the gate wanting that cash. They had a solid night for the first time in months, pummeling round after round to remind everyone who they are. They did end up winning the night and taking home the first place pot AND Shanahan’s share from last week. They beat out The Stumbling Drunks, who came in Second place, and That’s What She Said, who eked their way into third.

Teams did really good on all the rounds this week, particularly the A to Z round, which saw high scores for nearly every team as well as the handouts, which teams did great on. It was also really fun to see all the lucky charms people brought with them for bonus points. Some of them were legitimately cool, like the silver dollar with the eagle landing on the moon, while others were decidedly less cool, like those smelly lucky socks you brought in. And c’mon, is that really your lucky penny or did you just find it in your pocket and make up a good story about it? Regardless, it was fun to see so many teams racking up bonus points this week.

At the end of the night it was our third place team that came out victorious thanks to a smart (read: small) wager on the final question. Interestingly, all three teams gave the same wrong answer to the question, but with their wager, team We Believe We Can Fly took home the cash, which was split three ways last night thanks to the great turnout.

Here’s the winning team with their winnings — or almost their winnings actually. Somehow I ended up one dollar short when paying them out, but they were gracious in accepting their slightly decreased pot.

What better way to kick off the post than with the great George Michael’s’ song Faith- The Pub Quiz Version. Excuse me, but I just got done having the privilege of providing an awesome quiz to the patrons of Britannia Arms (Sponsored by Gordon Biersch- If you aren’t drinking a Gordon Biersch then you are probably drinking something else. True Story) who came out to root on the hometown Sharks as the Sharks thrashed the Columbus Bumble Bees into submission with a 6-0 victory at the tank. The real winners though were the people who blended hockey, beer, and some good old fashioned  quizzing at the downtown Britannia Arms.

The Undisputed Champions of this Week rode in on the party bike. And that is not bike as in vroom, vroom; I’m talking an actual bicycle that you pedal with for exercise and enjoyment. I know its weird, but that is San Jose. Anyway this Party Bicycle came equipped with five seats for the gang named Hell on Wheels to come riding strong into this weeks Pub Quiz Challenge. After successfully locking up their bike with about seven different locks this group staked out the corner of the bar and just owned it. They were given some serious competition from the one man band known as the Diva and a band of merry misfits in Mary’s Merlins, but the unlikeliest of cape crusaders stole the show for the first three Sharks goals in the Bearded Wonder. He taunted, laughed maniacally, and could have been the forgotten son of Santa Claus as he gulped down drinks and gave a Doogie Howser like performance before throwing in the towel and heading back to The North Pole.

Once the bearded Wonder left then Hell on Wheels lost their training wheels and became En Fuego during the handout portion and Quiz Connect. This team claimed they were there for one drink, but ended up staying for three hours to collect the prize and the belt for this week. The highlight of the night for these bike pedaling enthusiasts was their incredible confidence at the challenge round question that I had to stop the high-fiving, beer pounding, cartwheeling, somersault show like I was the ringmaster under the big top to drop the yellow jersey wearing Tour de Force champions down just one notch to tell them that they were wrong. They were sad for about .005 seconds before I announced they were still the winners of the night. Hell on Wheels was rewarded with the Tower Power of delicious Gordon Biersch, VIP cards to the Brit, and what every competitor to Quiz night plays for- The Pub Quiz Championship Belt.

It was a great night as the victors took their winnings and rode off into the cold, dark night…On their bicycle!

Both Kitty Glitter and Ah Shit! achieved Bingo, simultaneously! So they both gained some bonus points and we learned the rest of the answers.  Kitty Glitter took a decent lead over Ah Shit! and we continued on to round 2.

Quizlinks challenged the teams in attendance…or so it seemed they both did fairly well on them. I think they just wanted perfection. Kitty Glitter kept their lead after round 2 but Ah Shit! was steadily catching up.

The handouts helped the teams out as they both did pretty well. Kitty Glitter kept their lead and we moved on to the final round.

Always a fun night at Biddy’s!!
