Wednesday’s Thirsty Lion quiz was positively ELECTRIC! And why wouldn’t it be? Thirsty Lion’s prizes and giveaways are UNPARALLELED! I mean, look at the stuff they give away at this place:

a bottle of champagne for the team closest to the correct answer to the Thirsty Lion Question of the week.

a BONUS challenge question, the winner of which gets a chance to spin the Thirsty Lion Wheel of Fortune, and win a prize like 20% off your check, an order of nachos, a slice of decadent chocolate cake, or even a 5 point bonus for next week’s quiz (or in this case, two weeks from now)

the losing team gets a reach into the Thirsty Lion Box o’ Fun (t-shirts, hats, flags, you name it)

the weekly standings, a MONTHLY game that pits team against team by the month for a $100 gift certificate to Grand Central Bowl

a kickass VIDEO quiz every week featuring visual rounds, video clips, and interactive pub quiz rounds, and the winning team wins COLD HARD CASH!

What quiz is better than THAT??? Well, let me tell you about March 10th’s quiz and you can judge for yourself.

We had 58 very excited quizzers buzzing with anticipation for the Wednesday night video quiz, of which a good 20 people had never played the quiz before. It’s always great to meet new players, and new team names like the Geriatric Dragons, Sneaky Jesuses and Marshmellow Happens, along with some familiar faces (Your Tax Dollars at Work, Yahtzee, and Kim and the Jong Ills). I finally changed out that DVD scroll that we’ve had rolling since last summer, so folks were happy to laugh at new pics, like this one:

Our SEAWORTHY theme brought out no less than four ships in bottles, our bonus point op of the week. My favorite was a little tiny paper folded ship inside a 1-1/2″ bottle. It wasn’t the object itself as much as the story behind it- it was made by her boyfriend just for her (cue the “awwww”!). (Not on the email list? EEK! Go here, pronto!)

The quiz went great! Lots of fun questions about squids, Captain Marvel, and Popeye. The best question of the night is below. Before I get off on that tangent again, a big CONGRATS to the winning team, Elephantastic! You got yourself a whopping $124 and are now on the big board in the running for that $100 gift certificate, joining Yahtzee and Hangin’ Brain. Hangin’ Brain also got themselves a bottle of the bubbly by guessing that the deepest part of the ocean was 35,000 ft. (the Mariana Trench is the deepest point in Earth’s oceans, 35,840 feet).

AND NOW……….. the video of the night. Question 10: Who is this actor?

Zod popped into question 12, 15, 18, 20….. then thanks to good spirited, possibly inebriated teams asking to repeat #10, the room got it’s share of ZOD.

HOWEVER, guys, there’s more to this. This is for you, my Thirsty Lion friends. Oh, and remember, NO QUIZ NEXT WEDNESDAY at the Thirsty Lion.

And I think this is just…. well, bad!

Thank GOD no one used that name this week. I struggled enough with seamen and poop decks and finally at the Sellwood, with “Long hard and full of seamen” I can’t help it with the damn tired old braces, the lisps just slip out. Just like the seamen. (When the water gets rough and tumble) This week at Sellwood, I thought certainly it was time for team Sharky to claim their rightful ownership of the first place winnings. Sadly, though they played the best game I’ve seen in awhile, staying ahead of our more mature team in second place Cattle Prodigy, Sharky just couldn’t hold onto that 20 point lead at the end, thus they AND Cattle Prodigy lost out to New Quiz on the Block. New Quiz quietly crept up from 5th place to jump in and win all the money! Sometimes it’s all about the wager. Sometimes it’s all about the seamen slipping off a boat, but sometimes, it’s that wager at the end that gets you.

And so, in the second week with the newly labeled “Cursed” sharky t-shirts, they went home with nothing but pride in the job they’d done. That alone is worth like 5 million dollars though, right? I mean, come on, it’s better to know you’ve done a good job. Chin up Sharky! Next week, I’m betting my money on YOU. Those shirts will win out yet, I guarantee it! I mean, hell, if those old guys can’t beat you at all that trivia from beyond your birth year, then you’ve done all right in my book. :)

I’ll post some pics tomorrow here of the awesome ships in a bottle that the good teams at Sellwood created. Don’t forget to start thinking of all the ways that YOU can represent ME at the QATQM. Perhaps, team Sharky, what you need is some way to alter the shirts temporarily for the game, thus inscribing upon them my moniker. There shall be booty and great celebrations at this fine event, indeed.

Somebody better stop em quick! They might go for another 8 win streak like they did last Summer under their Friends of Fred Noonan name. Here’s a pic of the winners this week:

They brought in several clever items that literally fit the “ship in a bottle” theme, which was funny.

Speaking of funny, team names this week included: The Salty Aardvarks, Rated Aaargh, Half Mast, Futons Pull out but we Don’t, Seamen on the Poop Deck, and I Love Seamen. The last of which had a funny way of writing their name on their work sheets:

I laughed.

Next week is my last week in Hood River! St. Patty’s Daaaaaay! I’m gonna start off with a drink and end with a hell of a fun time. I’ll try to keep it together during the quiz. You know, it being St. Patty’s Day, where I’ll likely be drinking all night. Not because I might get emotional or something. No, no, it’ll be the beer that I’ll be trying to keep together.

Yeah.

Well, we had one in the house last night — alright, maybe not a real Marine Biologist, but we did have one heck of a Shark Week fan on “Them Dirty Rats.” They managed to score a full 100 percent on the Shark-themed handout, but alas, it wasn’t enough to vault them into the Challenge Round.

Instead, last night’s top three were “Rum, Sodomy, and the Stumbling Drunks,” “Burning Betties,” and “The Bumpin’ Uglies” — and that’s the way they placed at the end of the night, too. All three got the Challenge Cound question right, and all three wagered to win, but there can be only one! So check out the Stumbling Drunks in all their glory!

Next week, we hold an Irish wake for me twenties (AGAIN), as our March 16th quiz serves as a countdown to the highest, holiest day in a pub all year — Saint Quizmaster JPP Day! Until then, be sure to stop by QUIZMASTER JPP’S FACEBOOK PAGE and in the meantime, be well, play hard, and try remember everything you can!

Daaa na, daaaa na. Da na da da da da da da da da da da dunnnna NAA! Beware what’s in the water, cause it’ll get ya. Especially if it’s been “chummed” before stepping in, which is exactly what the ‘Chum Lords’ did.

While team ‘Nautical Nymphos’ closes in on the leaders and looks for an upset, and last week’s champions ‘Distended Rectum’ is showing the reason why they are champions…the ‘Chum Lords’ are hunting. They went looking for some food at Schmizza Pub & Grub and smelled blood. It came down to the final round.

‘Distended Rectum’ went with their previous week’s strategy and bet nil, while ‘Nautical Nymphos’ bet the farm. It all came down to the question, and the ‘Chum Lords’ knew it. How many people did Jaws kill? The ‘Chum Lords’ answered 5, even though they…uh, I mean Jaws, probably ate more.

It was a boat load of fun last night at the Bridgeport Brewery and thankfully, no mutiny as the teams were in good spirits even after the top team shuffle up in our final due to our handout about shark identificaiton. A whole page full of beautiful, colorful shark. A few teams knew ALL the sharks, thus upsetting our standings and putting several new teams into the top 5. We had scores ranging from 50 to 120 points in that final handout, thus creating a time-space continuum/gap for some teams to slide right into the top 5. All those slippery seamen and well oiled poop decks had me a little flustered, and it did get slippery in the final round with all the talk of poop decks and seamen and sperm, but in the end, we found our winner, who, sadly, had nothing disgusting in their name. It was Capt’n Nemo who took home $102 for first place last night. They rose up from fourth place and GUESSED at our final challenge question ‘How many people died in the first Jaws film, not including the dog?” They rallied the troops and made a guess, coming out on top ‘o the game.

1st place winning team Capt’n Nemo ^ 2nd place team: Little Mermaid’s clam ^

Other great team names from last night worth a mention:

The Poop Deck; Poop deck full of seamen; The slippery seamen; Scooby’s Red Tide; Wombats on a boat!

See my confusion? In our wagers for the final round, two teams wrote wagers that said “Poop deck” So I had to clairfy WHICH Poop deck we were referring to, the one with the Seamen, or the plain ol’ poop deck. Either way, it was slippery with all those seamen and poop decks last night. Not to mention all those “Ships” in a bottle. Paper ships in baby bottles. Vodka bottles with the word “Ship” written on a piece of paper and shoved inside. And, finally, this: The lamest “Ship in a bottle” via Scooby’s Red Tide last night. And being lamest attempt of course, I awarded points and had to share. This is Erin. This is NOT Erin holding up an actual ship IN a bottle, it’s Erin holding up a bottle in front of a picture of a ship on her t-shirt. What’s not to love?

Find me and lots of the Pub Quiz gang over on FB for some pre and post game fun. I’m on FB HERE or on twitter here! Join the fun, create a page, talk the smack. I’d love to see you there. I”m looking for fan #300 on FB. Sure to be a prize in that winning number…so, if it’s you, join soon, I’ve got 4 spots left till we hit the magic number…

Finally, last night was your chance to meet new Quizmaster Carlson Muss, he will be running the quiz at Bogey’s in Gresham, and shall be deemed a fine addition to our Pub Quiz team. Carlson made it through all my bad, tasteless jokes in stride, and grades like a seasoned pro, thus, he earned my stamp of approval. Good Luck to Carlson out at Bogey’s. They’ll break him in good there, I’m sure. Nice and gentle on the poop deck maybe? (Trust me, I’m rolling my own eyes. I just can’t help myself)

After a short vacation from Tuesday quizzes, I am excited to be back on the circuit at Hal’s Tavern!

They have been running a great Thursday quiz, but decided to switch to Tuesdays from now on. It’s a great place for all types, complete with both a pool table and shuffle board, which we all know is the ultimate trump card when it comes to bar entertainment.

I’m happy to come out of early retirement, but I’d be even happier if some of you came to check it out. It’s always nice to be apart of a new quiz night, so you can claim your “Pub Quiz Regular” status right off the bat.

As promised, I’m keeping the Championship Belt alive and well, with the winners getting both a wonderful piece for the fridge (and suitable for framing) as well as FIVE (yes, it’s a number that calls for capitalization) bonus points the next time the team comes in to play.
It’s a boost to the ego that everyone should have.

Thanks again for all the good wishes and comments from those at the Gypsy and all the teams who stuck with us through the winter. Hope I see you all soon!

Good night, good luck and good quizzing!

Tuesdays at Biddy’s are getting crowded.

Rowdy.

Downright competitive.

And high stakes.

Weekly Pub Quiz regulars Clarification Please came away the big winners this week, drawing from a total pot of well over $100. The evening was notable, though, in the amount of new teams – and return teams.

The most crowded evening since QuizMaster Kevin began some weeks ago, nine different teams were within 4 right answers worth of points – every team staring at the money – right up until the very end.

Clarification Please

In fact, Clarification Please was near the bottom of the pack at the end of the 1st round, and they had a lot of ground to make up. Their strong 2nd round push landed them a spot in the Final Challenge round, though, and sometimes that’s all it takes.

Betting ‘69′ just to be cheeky, though?

Well, hard to argue, as it’s worked for them twice now…
