Oh man, I have NEVER seen a Challenge Round like last night at the Belmont. Let me get right to it.

A huge crowd of 85 people turned out to the Thursday Throwdown, so the pot was more than $255. On top of that, I buy two pitchers of New Belgium for folks, AND we got a TON of Sailer Jerry and Wild Turkey prizes in. It was the night to be at the Belmont, for sure!

So going into the Challenge Round, The Captain is Parking was winning the night. They have a history of blowing it in the Challenge Round, and you could clearly tell they were nervous. So, thinking they were walking into a shootout, along with The Wildcatters, C Average, the Monkeys and the Backstabbers, they only wagered Zero.

When I revealed the answers and the wagers, before I began, I told everyone that the Captain is Parking got the question right (but only they knew that they wagered zero, so it didn’t even matter). I revealed the wagers and answers of all the other teams, and then, finally, the big reveal: The Captain is Parking was the ONLY team to get the last question right — so despite wagering zero, THEY WON!

Yes, it’s Superbowl Sunday, and yes I’m a little delayed in posting the blog. Sorry folks! Much like you, I’m up to my armpits in buffalo wings, and it’s a little hard to type with these cheeto-crusted fingers. The big day is today, and I’m predicting Patriots by three. Mind you, I don’t so much care (so before you go ranting on me), but it is what it is… the Hoodie Man is going to snatch away New York’s Superbowl dreams. Just sayin’.

Speaking of big game dreams, we had a MASSIVE contest on Thursday at the Belmont. The Best Trivia in Quiztown saw damn near 70 people going at it, for a pot of more than $200! That’s some fantastic quiz action.

Taking first place on the Magic/Faith/Superstition-themed night was the No Mouth Monkeys, taking a hard-fought victory against the second place
Wildcatters, and third place/reigning Belmont Steak champs Team C Average. The Bibliophones, a newish team to the Belmont scene made their way into the Challenge Round, as did “Baby, I’m going to… so hard,” who look like they may be back after a long sabbatical. Also muscling their way into the Finals was “Captain is Parking,” who need to find that magic again, themselves.

Alright, I got standings all added up, we’re about 1/3 of the way through the season, so it’s still anyone’s game. Maybe it’s yours? Come back next week and we’ll see!

Wow, what an incredible night of quiz last night at Portland’s wildest bar trivia night. 71 people packed the house, all hungry for hoppy beers, hamburgers to die for, and the most competitive, pulse-pounding quiz night around. With all those players, the pot was ridiculous, and even the third place team walked out with more than $40. (At other quizzes around town, you don’t even win that much for first!) AND we had some great prizes from New Belgium, so I bought a couple pitchers for a pair of lucky teams as well. So let’s break that down again. What do lucky quizzers win at Belmont EVERY Thursday?

1. First place gets a ENORMOUSLY HUGE cash prize.
2. Second place gets another GIANT cash prize.
3. Third place gets yet another BIG cash prize.
4. I buy the team that does best in Round One a pitcher of New Belgium.
5. I buy the team that does second-to-worst in Round Two another pitcher of New Belgium.
6. New Belgium kicks in all sorts of great gear for the winning team — hats, t-shirts and more!

Find me another bar that does this. I want to go there, and I want to bask (like a crocodile) in the glow of its awesomeness.

Speaking of Awesomeness, it was an incredible night of quiz talent. Team C Average got every question and bonus question in round one correct — EXCEPT FOR ONE! The Wildcatters got every handout question right The No Mouth Monkeys got every Name That Tune question right! ! And in the end — after some masterful wagering in the Challenge Round by C Average — that was the final results: C Average came in first, The Monkeys in second, and The Wildcatters in third. Also making an appearance in the finals was “Bueller… Bueller… Anyone?” and “Baby, I’m going to trickle down your economics so hard.”

Answer: Kirstie Alley… wait… no… Death Valley! They rhyme, and Kirstie was the answer to the previous question — you can see how I’d get confused.

In fact, confusion reigned supreme at The Belmont last night, as I made my triumphant return to the Thursday Throwdown. First question of the night was, “Wait, where’s Jeremy, you know the nice guy who’s been here the last couple weeks?” And then the second question, “Why are you swearing at us and hurling insults our way?”

It was great to be back in Belmont’s sweet loving arms, actually. Fierce competition reigned again, and this time we had three teams in the Challenge Round with “The Wildcatters” out for blood, and getting it — going rail to rail in first place on the night. They beat out the currently-reigning Belmont Steak Champs, “Team C Average” for first place on the evening, with “Monkey Recall” rounding out the finals teams.

About 50 quizzers showed last night at The Belmont Inn, and we had ourselves some fun.  Team Five Geeks of the Apocalypse took first in round one, scoring a pitcher o’ beer.  Fittingly named, team “Consistently Second to Last” was just that in round 2, netting the second pitcher of the house’s finest.  In the end, it took a on-theme team name to win first place: Baby, I’m gonna fraud you SO hard!

Nicely done!  I’ll be taking apart my poor camera this weekend to try to fix it (SD Card slot is jammed with something).  Thanks to Renee for snapping this pic.

Also thanks to Liz for making me mystery drinks that were actually very good, and Jason for the food to help get me back to sober.

In second place last night, team Wildcatters, with Pretty Good for a Mongoloid getting their commanding lead snatched away at the last minute in the final round.

Team Pubix Cervix Announcement won a pitcher for their team for being in first place at the end of round uno.  They tried to convince me they aren’t this good at trivia, but they were strong all night!  I say they have hit their stride.  And at the end of round 2, Fish Assisted Suicide got a pitcher for their 2nd to last place.

Congratulations to team The Captain is Parking for their first place win last night!

My camera has a piece of plastic stuck in the card bay, so Jenny on the right was kind enough to lend me her smart device of choice.

Wow, the weather outside is frightful, and it’s past the season for those lyrics…  Laaaame.

It was a blasty blast as always, subbing for JPP at the B.I.!  Had one team of ladies that just wanted to play for fun, afterward they said they did indeed have fun, and might play for the cash the next time.

Congratulations to team Bootleg Chinese Monkeys for their first place win last night!

They rocked the quiz out like pros and took home first place’s prize for their trouble.

At the end of round one, team The Captain Is Parking got themselves a pitcher of beer for being in first place so far, and team House of No Future got a pitcher for the 2nd round criteria (2nd to last).

Second place came down to TWO tie-breakers, between The Wildcatters and The Captain is Parking – they both nailed the tie-breaker question, so it went to a number question, and The Captain is Parking beat the Wildcatters’ guess by a single digit!

Man oh man, did we welcome the lil baby Jesus with some gusto on Thursday night. Our annual Holiday-themed quiz is always a merry affair, and with Belmont Inn’s $2 well drinks and 20+ beers on tap, there’s a whole lot of joy to go around.

The Round Two “Question or Carol” round was incredibly festive, with some great singers belting out their favorite Christmas tunes. I wish we could do that round a couple times a year, because people have so much fun, but only doing it once a year is part of what makes it so special.

But it was a contentious night because it was the last night of the Belmont Steak Standings, and to repeat as champs, the Wildcatters had to win, while C Average couldn’t make the challenge round — and even THEN, it would be a tie. C Average didn’t make the cut, so the tension was on, but in addition to the Wildcatters, the Challenge Round featured a ton of great quizzing teams, including the Captain Is Parking, who eventually won the night.

An incredible victory for the Captain Is Parking, who have been on Santa’s nice list because they’ve played well all year, but have won so few quizzes. C Average takes the cake again as the Steak Champions, and everyone else begins sharpening their intellect to take down the new champs. You know, if the democrats really wanted to drive home the point of government excess, they’d point out that only a republican president (George HW Bush) has allowed Cher to record a music video on a US Navy aircraft carrier. Talk about government excess. Just watch the video (if you can… my eyes started burning 12 seconds in, and my ears are still bleeding, even though I muted my computer).

Seriously. Watch the video. Tell me how long you can endure it before shutting it off.

But these are the kinds of things that we ask questions about at Pub Quiz, for better or for worse. For better, last night, we had a TON of teams at Portland’s Wildest trivia night. Alright, maybe not a TON. We had 16 though — and considering the theme underwhelmed a lot of our regulars (hey, they all can’t be winners to everyone) that was an outstanding turnout. We gave out nearly $200 in cash, some awesome new Belgium and Sailor Jerry gear, and had a GREAT time.

It was, quite frankly, one of the most fun quizzes we’ve had in ages. Because of how awesome a lot of teams did, SEVEN teams made it into the Challenge Round of our Divas, Debutaunts and Dancers themed quiz. But only one crew could out-sass and out jazz-hand the rest, and that was the No Mouth Monkeys.

The victory actually helped The Wildcatters in their bid to repeat as the Belmont Steak Champs. But it is an uphill battle — The Wildcatters must win, and C Average must not make the Challenge Round next week, in order to force a tie. A Christmas miracle indeed for the reigning champs, but stranger things have happened!

Soylent Green Cereal — That Familiar That Everyone Loves™.

Ah we had a rip-roaring time at the Belmont last night. Why? Well because everyone loves cereal, do they not? If I had to pick my favorite of all time, it would have to be Cap’n Crunch, so it was fitting that the last question of the night came down to that one.

A big crowd as usual at the Thursday Throwdown, everyone packing the place to get their quiz and their crunch on. Five teams ended up in the Challenge Round, though three more were right in the mix. But the last question came down to some crafty Pub Quiz veterans. Team C- Average, the current points leader in the Belmont Steak, the reigning Steak champs the Wildcatters, The No Mouth Monkeys (who are always trouble at the top), Captain Is Parking (who someday soon will start wining more than they lose) and Soylent Green (the prodigal quizzers who have returned to Belmont!).

One of those teams knew the answer to the Challenge Round Question (What was the name of Cap’n Crunch’s boat?), and they were the ones to take home the night’s top prize — SOYLENT GREEN! Yes, they’re made of people and they took all the people down at Belmont. Great job…

That threw a smll wrench into the standings, which end in two weeks. Look for some dogfights at the Belmont right before Christmas. Well, not real dogfights, but you get it…
