You know, sometimes I ask myself, “If Snooki can write a book, why can’t I?” And then I realize that I don’t have the chops. The bangs. The artificial tan. The glue-on nails. The fake eyelashes. The backing of a major media conglomerate who is trying to make every penny it can from my fleeting, ridiculous fame. Clearly, I’ve got my work cut out for me.

But I’m not alone! Last night, eleven teams cozied up to Shanahan’s to make their stab at fame (fake tans, eyelashes, and all other things) by winning our Library-themed pub quiz. But like they say in Highlander and in the library men’s room — “There can be only one!”

Three teams duked it out in the Challenge Round, first-place through four rounds Stumbling Drunks, Off Nightly, and librarian-staffed “That’s What She Said.” Who would win!? The Librarian, of course, right? No… The Stumbling Drunks pulled off the upset, flipping card catalogs over on their way to victory.

Who made all the crowds magically appear at Shanahan’s these past two weeks? Maybe it was Gob, but it wasn’t a trick — A trick is something a whore does for money…. Or cocaine!

But the crowds held up at the Tuesday Tussle, Vancouver’s only Pub Quiz — maybe they were after Shanahan’s take of last week’s quiz, a cool $52 that got rolled over to this week’s take. The Lemon Party, soon to disband, sadly, came roaring out of the gate wanting that cash. They had a solid night for the first time in months, pummeling round after round to remind everyone who they are. They did end up winning the night and taking home the first place pot AND Shanahan’s share from last week. They beat out The Stumbling Drunks, who came in Second place, and That’s What She Said, who eked their way into third.

Oh man, did we have a rocking’ 80′s-themed quiz in Vancouver, or what!? It really shouldn’t be all that surprising — the dream of the 80′s is still alive in Vancouvria, anyway… right comrades?

We had a PACKED house full of new teams and veteran quizzers alike. It wasn’t just the 80s theme that pulled them in, but rather an unquenchable passion for pub quizzery in general. I think we’ve got some new regulars up north, which should make Vancouvers ONLY quiz the place to be on Tuesday nights.

Five teams fought their way into the Challenge Round, with The Stumbling Drunks breaking into an early lead, but fading late. As usual, they had Off Nightly and the Lollipop Guild to contend with, but a smaller-than-usual Mno team turned out, and Team Shanahan’s brought in some ringers to make it interesting.

And it was INDEED interesting, since they managed to score second place (which means their $52 prize will get rolled into next week’s quiz!), the Mnos came up with second place, and OFF NIGHTLY WON IT! That’s right, contractually I’m required to say this: No one can beat Off Nightly!

The above image is the only one I could find on themed with the title of today’s post that wasn’t disgusting or terrible. But the fact is, there was some discussion of sharting at last night’s quiz, and I couldn’t just gloss over it. But that ickiness aside, we had a great night at Shanahan’s last night. Heck, we always do.

The first round saw a great effort by all the teams, with everyone fighting to be the first to pick from the Merch Box in 2012. Three teams (Lollipop Guild, Stumbling Drunks and That’s What She Said) ended up tying the round, so there was push into round two to determine who got those bragging rights. In that second “Who Am I?” round, Off Nightly surged to the head of the pack, dominating the field. “The Lemon Party” kicked butt on the handouts, and got almost every word of MLK’s speech correctly — though they missed the last one — pushing them so close to the Challenge Round. I gave them the opportunity to right their wrong by reading the speech out loud for 5 more points, but it still wasn’t enough to thrust them into the finals.

And at the end of it all, a wild night indeed, The Stumbling Drunks took home the top prize.

Just breeze in, collect some money, ask some trivia, and leave!

But I’m no grifter, the cash and prizes belonged to the winner of Tuesday’s con and con artistry quiz.

35 people seems like a lot to me in this winter season, I guessed there’d be a few ringer teams as usual, but it wasn’t so evident yet by the end of the first round’s 5 for 5.

The spread found it’s way in by round 2, and the pin to securing a lead was of course Secret message’s secret message and  it’s 20 point bonus.

So after grading round 2 and the handouts, the tension was palpable- who was going to make the cut for the final three into the challenge round?

The Lollipop Guild, The Stumbling Drunks, and That’s what She Said. Usual suspects I’m guessing.

Unfortunately after such heated competition, no one had seen the 1990 film the Grifters, so it came down to who wagered the least. The Lollipop Guild had a decent strategy betting low with 31, but you can’t get much lower than zero, so The Stumbling Drunks effectively conned them and That’s what she said out of first place.

So, congratulations Stumbling Drunks for the win!

What an holly jolly night of quiz at Shanahan’s in Vancouver. They didn’t just come out for the most fun quiz of the year! They also came for a special screening of “Black Santa’s Revenge,” the most violent, swear-filled, and nudity packed Christmas film there ever was — all 20 minutes of it!

We played the movie after our Question or Carol Round 2, an annual treat of a skill versus smarts, and it’s great fun.

We also raised more than $50 for the Portland Rescue Mission — and you can keep giving by clicking on this link!

As for the quiz, The Stumbling Drunks surged ahead in Round 1, but the pack started to catch up with them in Round 2. The handouts also brought things closer too, and in the end, Off Nightly, the Lemon Party, and the Lollipop Guild joined them in the Challenge Round. Of all those whip-smart teams, only one knew the answer to the final question — and that was Off Nightly. They not only won a pot of $84, but they won Team Shanahan’s $24 purse from last week as well, because the house team never wins the money, they turn it over to next week’s quiz.

Oh god, after last night’s quiz at Shanahan’s, how can ANYONE’S heart go on? An absolutely inspired Name That Tune round 2 was a great equalizer on the night, allowing teams that felt long gone to climb back into the fray.

But I’m getting ahead of myself. The night started off with a difficult Round 1, but The Stumbling Drunks sprinted from the gate and ahead of the pack with a great score. That round two featuring music from RuPaul to Dee-Lite really kicked them in the quiz hole, and they scored WORST of everyone. But surprisingly, our musical savants in that round were no other than Team Shanahan’s, who surged on that effort and got into the Challenge Round. Also doing well in Round Two, The Lollipop Guild worked their way into the Challenge Round as well.

But in the end, The Stumbling Drunk’s wagering abilities garnered them the first place finish, even though no team got the final question right. Shanahan’s came in second place, which means next week’s quiz ALREADY has a $24 pot — well played… and a little Holiday bonus for you quizzers. Come next week and see if you can get a little extra stuffing for your stocking.

Oh what a tasty night we had up in Vancouver, home of the Shaney Fries. Another stellar crow of quizzers rolled out to battle it out over trivia, and another team walked out with fistfuls of cash. You know that toy surprise inside the box of cereal? Sometimes this job makes me feel like I’m that toy — I bring so much joy.

Speaking of, our cereal themed quiz was awesome fun. We tossed all sorts of questions around, rolling with Chex and Corn Pops and five rounds of awesome quiz action. Four teams muscled their way through to the Challenge Round — The Stumbling Drunks, Off Nightly, The Lollipop Guild and That’s What She Said — but only one got to have the last bite of cereal. Appropriately, it was The Stumbling Drunks, who took the big bowl of cash — since they recommended the category a while back anyway. Aaaaaactually, they prefer to be called “Ringers.” That’s what we learned at Pub Quiz last night — it was our cult and cult classic themed quiz, and I can’t figure out which of those categories the Lord of the Rings fits into. I’m also going to say that I don’t so much care. Take that, nerdos!

We had a great time in Vancouver, regardless — definitely the friendliest and most welcoming pub quiz in all the land. Seven teams were duking it out for the top prize last night, an evening packed with a great Jeopardy Round two, a pair of excellent handouts and a hefty Challenge Round. At the end of it, The Stumbling Drunks staggered away with the first place purse, besting The Lollipop Guild and That’s What She Said for bragging rights on the night. But they’re bragging about knowing the most about cults. Yay for you guys, right?

Well the standings are simmering to a boil. Three weeks to go now, and The Stumbling Drunks have broken away, but The Lemon Party still can catch them. I can’t wait to see how this ends up!

What a night at Shanahan’s this week! We had a HUGE cash prize since the house team won last week, and competition was fierce to get the more than $130 first place prize.

Six teams were wrassling for the cash, and the thifty theme made it all the more competitive because these Vancouver folks know a deal when they see one (that’s why the freeloaders live north of the border, after all). Team Shanahan’s was hoping to win two weeks in a row to make an even bigger UBER-prize for next week, but alas, they got trounced by The Lollipop Guild, a cold-blooded quiz squad who rocks the layaway as well as the happy hour.
