Everyone certainly was quiet during most of last night’s library quiz.

Must have had some reasonably difficult questions, seeing as no one could pull off the bonus points for five questions right in round one’s 5 for 5. The books everyone brought helped their score too. It’s nice when the bonus opportunity is easy like that, isn’t it?

Who Am I can take awhile, especially when the clues stump people- or worse, they /think/ they know it but they’re just not sure and figure they’ll wait for the next clue only to realize they were right earlier.

That’s quizzes for ya. You can know things but sometimes you don’t know what you need to when you want to.

Count Chocula’s Dirty Black Jock Strap tore through the handouts again, held the lead until the final round, and defiantly wagered 0 points. Which was well enough, as everyone got the final question wrong. So Count Chocula’s Jock Strap won with 290 points!

Congrats! Hope this picture’s clear enough for you. Maybe I’ll bring an actual camera sometime.

Thank you, that was my tequila sunrise vanishing act.

Most everyone that showed up to last night’s quiz brought their tokens of faith, superstition, and luck (or showed me their keys and said a key chain was lucky. But luck is a magic that can enchant any object, including underwear, so who am I to deny anyone?) for bonus points, hoping it’d give them the boost necessary to make finals or win the game, and it did indeed come heavily into play in terms of points.

A splinter team merged with Count Chocula’s Diry Black Jock Strap, and they became a powerhouse of knowledge- racing to first for the final round and holding it by a miraculous /1/ point away from tying with second placers ‘My Precious’, and the Sandbar Developers sunk by high wagers and obscure dates important to Protestants and the challenge question for third place.

Congrats, Count Chocula’s jock strap!

In a day or

[high-pitched] twoooooooooo

80′s pop is so great. Maybe better than 90′s, and definitely better than the 00′s

We had a grand celebration of 80′s tunes, tv, and more at the Horse and Hound last night. Quizzers brought their band shirts, leather jackets, fingerless gloves, and swatch watches to bat for bonus points and cred.

Not to be left out of the loop by the older crowd, Get Bent took round 1′s bingo bonus points, but dropped out of the running during round 2′s Name That Tune- which stumped even veteran 80′s music listeners with on-the-tip-of-your-tongue song titles and memorable choruses. (Someone missed Elton John’s ‘I’m still standing’? No way!)

Chocula took the lead with their extreme knowledge of 80′s tunes, 80′s sitcoms, and female authors after round 2 and handouts.

In the final round it came to Chocula, My Precious, and Sandbar devs but no one could quite remember the album ‘Video killed the Radio Star’ is from so the lowest wager took the majority of the night’s $75 pot.

And that lowest wager came frooom…The Sandbar Developers!

Congrats on the win, and kudos for the 80′s spirit Sandbar Developers.

Close call last night at the H&H! I was a little worried 10minutes to 7 that the snow would keep everyone grounded, so extra special thanks to everyone that came and made the game happen, and made a new team feel at home in our crazy weird quizosphere.

Some tough bingo questions for sure, plenty of groans as I read aloud the answers. Yeah, you nearly had that one!

Since no one got the bingo bonus points, and most everyone aced the State nicknames sheet, and nearly aced the dream movie handout- round 2′s on this day in history 10 point answers were a big deal!

Sandbar Developers had that one in the bag of course, and graciously let in the new team to enter the finals in 4th place for the final Challenge Question-

What was martin luther king jr’s name before he changed it to Martin? Surprise, surprise this one stumped everyone!

Well it definitely wasn’t Marcus, or Clarence. It was Michael!

Michael luther king jr…

Everyone had bet big- oh, except for Get Bent. They bet 31 points and took the win for having lost the least of wagers. Sneaky sob’s.

Congratulations Get Bent, for the win!

If you used another team name recently, well I’ll ask you guys next week I guess

On to Standings!

British Bulldogs-1
On the rocks-1
Slackers- 1
Bullshitters-1
Freud’s Friends-2
George-2
Leprechaun’s Christmas Gold-3
Get Bent-3
My Precious- 4
Cerealists-5
At least we’re not last- 9
Count Chocula’s Dirty Black Jock Strap-12
Sandbar Developers- 14

Well we’re halfway through the first 3-month quarter of the derby, good luck to all!

Hope to see you next week

Back to back quizzes for me, returning from Vancouver’s Shanahan to bring the quiz back to the hood.

Can’t let your guard down against cons, even in the Horse & Hound. Sneaky cell phone use, answer peeping, too many team members- well we’ll get to that later, but suffice to say I as the Quizmaster do my best to be impartial while upholding the rules and fairness of the quiz.

For example, in the first round there was some debate as to whether or not ‘y’ serves as a consonant in ‘Wyoming’, concerning a question about state names that begin with two consonants. I typically go by 1.the answers provided, 2.majority vote/expert knowledge, and 3.my gut; in that order. Now, the answers provided didn’t list it, the majority was against giving it to the team, and so was my gut. Upon looking it up I believe I made the right decision.

Here’s y as a consonant: yes, yam, yellow

Here’s y as a vowel: gym, hairy, cycle

So if I were to gander a guess I’d say y in Wyoming serves as a vowel and not as a consonant, if there was someone super knowledgeable about these things I would of course hear them out.

Ok, enough with the Phonics lesson!

Count Chocula’s Dirty Black Jock Strap has really dialed it in lately, a wide range of knowledge and the luck to pull in bingo bonus points. By the final round it came to them, the Sandbar devs in third, and My precious in second. (Yes, my mother was on that team, happy birthday to her, etc.)

As knowledgeable as Count chocula is, they unfortunately chose The Music Man for the challenge question, which ended up being about a movie they hadn’t seen!

The other two teams got it and rose to first and second respectively.

Now, back to that whole con bit.

I always try to catch people who don’t pay in to the pot and play, and also people who tack on to full teams. 6 is the max for some arbitrary reason, but a reason nonetheless! I believe I have participant co-operation when I explain the rules and all, and often that seventh person really is just sitting there. Now, second and third place had to point out they saw extra people at My Precious’s table. If you ask me, they had at least one person not contributing, and an accused eigth player sitting near them was actually on another team. I figured they won fair and square, but I don’t want to send anyone home unhappy, it’s one of my prerogatives or something. Surprisingly after explaining the situation to My Precious, the team graciously offered to give the win over to the second place team, Sandbar Devs, for their unintended con.

So there you have it, congratulations to Sandbar Developers for the win with 707 points. My Precious in second after a penalty with 703 points, and Count Chocula’s in third with 107 points.

Now. The Standings.

British Bulldogs-1
On the rocks-1
Slackers- 1
Bullshitters-1
Boom/Diva Cups- 3
Leprechaun’s Christmas Gold-3
My Precious- 4
Cerealists-5
At least we’re not last- 9
Sandbar Developers-12
Count Chocula’s Dirty Black Jock Strap-12

The standings are a big deal I know! And for two teams at the moment, it’s neck and neck. Will a dark horse emerge? An under hound perhaps?

Next week I’ll be as vigilant as ever, nay moreso, so that teams don’t have to worry about foul play and just have fun, as that is the desired result.

Hope to see you all there, Marcus out.

Don’t mind me just waiting for the best movie adaptation of the best book series ever, no need to hate.

The fellowships of the quiz, bands of elves, dwarves, and men came seeking glory in the quiz citadel Pubs Deep, and so battled for first place and the points in placing it may bestow upon them.

Count Chocula’s dirty black jock strap reminded everyone just how important bonus points can be after bringing in a trove of tolkien treasures and nabbing Bingo’s bonus 20 points- all the other teams could hope to do was muscle their way into the top three with round 2 and the handouts.

The pileup changed everytime, but the triple threat made it to the finals again: Count Chocula’s, Sandbar Developers, and At least we’re not last.

Chocula’s bet low to keep down the risk of their losing first, and picked just the right challenge question to assure their victory- who else but diehard fans would know the entirety of John Ronald Reuel Tolkien’s name?

Congrats, Count Chocula’s Dirty Black Jock Strap for the win!

On to the Trivia Derby!

On the rocks-1
Slackers- 1
Bullshitters-1
West Side Hooligans/My Precious- 2
Boom/Diva Cups- 3
Leprechaun’s Christmas Gold-3
Cerealists-4
At least we’re not last- 8
Sandbar Developers-9
Count Chocula’s Dirty Black Jock Strap-10

Edit: Altered points in standings, the Nothing quiz was unscheduled in Hood River and points from that night won’t be applied.

So if you read the pub quiz newsletter, there wasn’t actually a Horse & Hound quiz scheduled last night! But you know me, I love quizzes so much I went anyway, and with 21 people showing up to play we went on with the game.

Sorry about that! But if you don’t read the newsletter you must not read my blog either. Shame on you! No, no that was too much, excuse me.

So what was the quiz about last night?

What, nothing?

Are you sure?

Maybe the theme was just miscellaneous? No, I guess it was definitely nothing. But the questions were about things! All sorts of things.

Like chicks from TV shows with guns, classic movie quotes, and baseball diamond measurements.

We had four teams last night, so good chance that if you were there, you made it into the top three! Sandbar Developers were in full force and held greedily onto first as Leprechaun’s Christmas gold duked it out with At least we’re not Last. At least we’re not last seemed to have the edge with Bingo bonus points, but couldn’t seal the deal with the handouts and wagered nothing when it came time for the final challenge question.

Congratulations to Sandbar Developers for taking first with 661 points!
(And honorable mention to Big Bamboo who went home as Turkish Millionaires!)

Lookin’ mighty pleased with yourselves.

So, here are this week’s Horse & Hound Trivia Derby Standings!

On the rocks-1
Slackers- 1
Bullshitters-1
West Side Hooligans- 1
Big Bamboo-1
Boom/Diva Cups- 2
Leprechaun’s Christmas Gold-4
Cerealists-4
At least we’re not last- 7
Army of Skanks-7
Sandbar Developers- 10

Sandbar Developers are pulling ahead! Beware, competitors!
If you think you’re missing points or if I screwed up your team name just tell me!

See you all next week! Maybe next week the theme will be /everything/.

Merry Christmas! Don’t let anyone talk you down to ‘happy holidays’, because it just isn’t the same. And if anyone feels left out, well I can’t blame them because Christmas is the be all end all best holiday of the year and has absorbed everything from Thanksgiving to New Years in it’s pine branches. Sorry about that.

Here I was, drinking melon liqueur and oj at the pub last night, just starting to doubt the Christmas spirit like the start of your usual Christmas special when there arose such a clatter-well, people showed up. We could have learned some lesson about how quizzes aren’t really about cash and prizes, they’re about people- but then we had a $75 pot to compete over! And compete the teams did.

Sandbar Developers and Army of Skanks set the pace, with newcomers Leprechaun’s Christmas Gold chasing after them. It all came down to the final challenge question, and mondo props to Sandbar devs for knowing the answer! Rudolph the red nosed reindeer was a character designed for Montgomery Ward department store coloring books.

Congratulations Sandbar Developers for the win with 741 points!

Here are this week’s standings for the Horse & Hound Trivia Derby! Once again, showing up nets you 1 points, placing nets 1 additional point, and placing 1st nets you a third point.

On the rocks-1
Slackers- 1
Bullshitters-1
West Side Hooligans- 1
Boom/Diva Cups- 2
Leprechaun’s Christmas Gold-2
Cerealists-4
At least we’re not last- 5
Sandbar Developers- 7
Army of Skanks-7

It snowed last night! And had the sense to wait until after Pub Quiz to do it.

Anyone got an advent calendar? Countin’ down the days til Christmas? The ones that have little doors with chocolates are pretty awesome. Not as awesome as quiz night at the ol’ Horse & Hound though.

What makes it so awesome though? Can’t just be me or the quiz. Must be the happy quiztakers themselves, like the texan that payed for my beers- thanks!

So, usual suspects last night- Count Chocula’s Dirty Black Jock Strap did well in round one and did spectacularly in round two, with the guts to answer with only obscure clues to go on (worth 15 points!). However, At least we’re not last and Sandbar Developers nailed the handouts and closed the lead in time for the final showdown. Not being huge Madonna fans, At least we’re not last wagered nothing and snatched victory from the jaws of third place. Good to know when to hold em and when to fold em.

Pro Tip: 6 players really seems to make the difference! And consider your wagers carefully!

Congratulations to At least we’re not last!

So! How about those Standings? Here they are!

Horse & Hound Trivia Derby Week Two Standings

On the rocks-1
Slackers- 1
Bullshitters-1
Boom/Diva Cups- 2
West Side Hooligans- 1
At least we’re not last- 4
Sandbar Developers- 4
Cerealists-3
Count Chocula’s Dirty Black Jock Strap-5

Point guide: 1 point for showing up, 1 additional point for placing, 1 additional point for placing first for a total of 3 possible points

It’s easy to see who the big contenders are thus far, but there’s still a chance for other teams to sneak up on the leaders! Good luck to everyone, and I hope to see you next week!

You know, cereal doesn’t have to be a morning thing. Have you ever eaten fruity pebbles in the pale moonlight? Guided only by a plastic glow-in-the-dark spoon? Don’t try it in bed, you’ll make a mess. Not that I tried.

Not a free table in sight at the horse and hound last night and that’s what I like to see! Big cash was up for grabs and seven teams were ready to bout for it, but Count Chocula’s Dirty Black Jock Strap held 1st place just out of reach for the other teams from round one on and were able to answer the final challenge question by the time I finished reading it aloud. (They must be big Captain Crunch fans to know the guy’s official first name is Horatio) The other teams scrambled to make it to the top three by the final round, with the Sandbar Developers taking second place, and the Cerealists taking third.

Congratulations Count Chocula’s Jockstrap for the win with an astonishing 625 points!

Great pose, very team-like. Sorry it’s a little blurry!

Placing is going to be a bit more valuable to competitors from here on out as Horse & Hound officially kicks off it’s Standings Game!

The Horse & Hound Trivia Derby!

For the next three months I’ll be awarding 1 point to every team that shows up to play, another 1 point for teams that make the final three, and a third point for First Place. At the end of this term, the winner will recieve a trophy, reserved table, and more!

So here’s the current Standings!

Slackers- 1
Boom- 1
West Side Hooligans- 1
At least we’re not last- 1
Sandbar Developers- 2
Cerealists-2
Count Chocula’s Dirty Black Jock Strap-3

Aaaaand, we’re off! It’s still anyone’s game, and showing up is just as valuable as placing! Hope to see you all next week! (If your team changes it’s name often I’ll be asking the name you used the previous week)
