You know, sometimes I ask myself, “If Snooki can write a book, why can’t I?” And then I realize that I don’t have the chops. The bangs. The artificial tan. The glue-on nails. The fake eyelashes. The backing of a major media conglomerate who is trying to make every penny it can from my fleeting, ridiculous fame. Clearly, I’ve got my work cut out for me.

But I’m not alone! Last night, eleven teams cozied up to Shanahan’s to make their stab at fame (fake tans, eyelashes, and all other things) by winning our Library-themed pub quiz. But like they say in Highlander and in the library men’s room — “There can be only one!”

Three teams duked it out in the Challenge Round, first-place through four rounds Stumbling Drunks, Off Nightly, and librarian-staffed “That’s What She Said.” Who would win!? The Librarian, of course, right? No… The Stumbling Drunks pulled off the upset, flipping card catalogs over on their way to victory.

Yes, it’s Superbowl Sunday, and yes I’m a little delayed in posting the blog. Sorry folks! Much like you, I’m up to my armpits in buffalo wings, and it’s a little hard to type with these cheeto-crusted fingers. The big day is today, and I’m predicting Patriots by three. Mind you, I don’t so much care (so before you go ranting on me), but it is what it is… the Hoodie Man is going to snatch away New York’s Superbowl dreams. Just sayin’.

Speaking of big game dreams, we had a MASSIVE contest on Thursday at the Belmont. The Best Trivia in Quiztown saw damn near 70 people going at it, for a pot of more than $200! That’s some fantastic quiz action.

Taking first place on the Magic/Faith/Superstition-themed night was the No Mouth Monkeys, taking a hard-fought victory against the second place
Wildcatters, and third place/reigning Belmont Steak champs Team C Average. The Bibliophones, a newish team to the Belmont scene made their way into the Challenge Round, as did “Baby, I’m going to… so hard,” who look like they may be back after a long sabbatical. Also muscling their way into the Finals was “Captain is Parking,” who need to find that magic again, themselves.

Alright, I got standings all added up, we’re about 1/3 of the way through the season, so it’s still anyone’s game. Maybe it’s yours? Come back next week and we’ll see!

I’ll be honest… I don’t even know what’s going on in that picture. But I’m just going to leave it there, and let it burn into your computer monitor.

WOAH NELLY, did we have another packed house of awesome quizzers last night at the Hottest Quiz on Hawthorne. We had asses in every chair, and plates on every table, bringing in extras (tables, not asses) to accommodate all the great teams we had last night.

SIX teams made it into the Challenge Round, with Those Meddling Kids leading the way through four rounds. Thistle and Shamrock and the Shitty Beetles made their way to the quiz this week, busting into the challenge round in their usual impressive fashion. They were there to do battle with reigning champs House of no Future, but two new teams cracked the top spots too, with Xerces and See You Leder Hosen also making the finals.

In the end though, “Those Meddling Kids” won the night, retaking first place in the Space Room Saucer, in the process. As for Sister Act 2: Electric Boogaloo — you’ll have to come down and play the best Wednesday Night quiz in town, if you want to be a part of that inside joke. You won’t regret it!

Who made all the crowds magically appear at Shanahan’s these past two weeks? Maybe it was Gob, but it wasn’t a trick — A trick is something a whore does for money…. Or cocaine!

But the crowds held up at the Tuesday Tussle, Vancouver’s only Pub Quiz — maybe they were after Shanahan’s take of last week’s quiz, a cool $52 that got rolled over to this week’s take. The Lemon Party, soon to disband, sadly, came roaring out of the gate wanting that cash. They had a solid night for the first time in months, pummeling round after round to remind everyone who they are. They did end up winning the night and taking home the first place pot AND Shanahan’s share from last week. They beat out The Stumbling Drunks, who came in Second place, and That’s What She Said, who eked their way into third.

Wow, what an incredible night of quiz last night at Portland’s wildest bar trivia night. 71 people packed the house, all hungry for hoppy beers, hamburgers to die for, and the most competitive, pulse-pounding quiz night around. With all those players, the pot was ridiculous, and even the third place team walked out with more than $40. (At other quizzes around town, you don’t even win that much for first!) AND we had some great prizes from New Belgium, so I bought a couple pitchers for a pair of lucky teams as well. So let’s break that down again. What do lucky quizzers win at Belmont EVERY Thursday?

1. First place gets a ENORMOUSLY HUGE cash prize.
2. Second place gets another GIANT cash prize.
3. Third place gets yet another BIG cash prize.
4. I buy the team that does best in Round One a pitcher of New Belgium.
5. I buy the team that does second-to-worst in Round Two another pitcher of New Belgium.
6. New Belgium kicks in all sorts of great gear for the winning team — hats, t-shirts and more!

Find me another bar that does this. I want to go there, and I want to bask (like a crocodile) in the glow of its awesomeness.

Speaking of Awesomeness, it was an incredible night of quiz talent. Team C Average got every question and bonus question in round one correct — EXCEPT FOR ONE! The Wildcatters got every handout question right The No Mouth Monkeys got every Name That Tune question right! ! And in the end — after some masterful wagering in the Challenge Round by C Average — that was the final results: C Average came in first, The Monkeys in second, and The Wildcatters in third. Also making an appearance in the finals was “Bueller… Bueller… Anyone?” and “Baby, I’m going to trickle down your economics so hard.”

Oh man, did we have a rocking’ 80′s-themed quiz in Vancouver, or what!? It really shouldn’t be all that surprising — the dream of the 80′s is still alive in Vancouvria, anyway… right comrades?

We had a PACKED house full of new teams and veteran quizzers alike. It wasn’t just the 80s theme that pulled them in, but rather an unquenchable passion for pub quizzery in general. I think we’ve got some new regulars up north, which should make Vancouvers ONLY quiz the place to be on Tuesday nights.

Five teams fought their way into the Challenge Round, with The Stumbling Drunks breaking into an early lead, but fading late. As usual, they had Off Nightly and the Lollipop Guild to contend with, but a smaller-than-usual Mno team turned out, and Team Shanahan’s brought in some ringers to make it interesting.

And it was INDEED interesting, since they managed to score second place (which means their $52 prize will get rolled into next week’s quiz!), the Mnos came up with second place, and OFF NIGHTLY WON IT! That’s right, contractually I’m required to say this: No one can beat Off Nightly!

Answer: Kirstie Alley… wait… no… Death Valley! They rhyme, and Kirstie was the answer to the previous question — you can see how I’d get confused.

In fact, confusion reigned supreme at The Belmont last night, as I made my triumphant return to the Thursday Throwdown. First question of the night was, “Wait, where’s Jeremy, you know the nice guy who’s been here the last couple weeks?” And then the second question, “Why are you swearing at us and hurling insults our way?”

It was great to be back in Belmont’s sweet loving arms, actually. Fierce competition reigned again, and this time we had three teams in the Challenge Round with “The Wildcatters” out for blood, and getting it — going rail to rail in first place on the night. They beat out the currently-reigning Belmont Steak Champs, “Team C Average” for first place on the evening, with “Monkey Recall” rounding out the finals teams.

It’s always great when we get a question about crazy political corruption at pub quiz, because you never know what kind of answer the crowd will give you. Did Barry get busted with drugs? Yup. Cocaine, specifically? Yup. Crack cocaine, actually? Uhuh. And were there prostitutes involved? YOU BETCHA!

Sadly, our night at Hawthorne’s hottest trivia night weren’t nearly as exciting (or illicit!) but we still had a great time. We decided to up the ante for a winner-takes-all night, letting all five teams in the Challenge Round. That makes for some interesting results, but in the end it was Team Cupcake who beat out the pack.

The Cupcakes are hungry for their first ever Space Room Saucer championship. Can they do it? Well, we’ve got about 10 weeks to go to see. But so far, they are putting up a good fight.

Time will tell…

The above image is the only one I could find on themed with the title of today’s post that wasn’t disgusting or terrible. But the fact is, there was some discussion of sharting at last night’s quiz, and I couldn’t just gloss over it. But that ickiness aside, we had a great night at Shanahan’s last night. Heck, we always do.

The first round saw a great effort by all the teams, with everyone fighting to be the first to pick from the Merch Box in 2012. Three teams (Lollipop Guild, Stumbling Drunks and That’s What She Said) ended up tying the round, so there was push into round two to determine who got those bragging rights. In that second “Who Am I?” round, Off Nightly surged to the head of the pack, dominating the field. “The Lemon Party” kicked butt on the handouts, and got almost every word of MLK’s speech correctly — though they missed the last one — pushing them so close to the Challenge Round. I gave them the opportunity to right their wrong by reading the speech out loud for 5 more points, but it still wasn’t enough to thrust them into the finals.

And at the end of it all, a wild night indeed, The Stumbling Drunks took home the top prize.
