Oh man, I have NEVER seen a Challenge Round like last night at the Belmont. Let me get right to it.

A huge crowd of 85 people turned out to the Thursday Throwdown, so the pot was more than $255. On top of that, I buy two pitchers of New Belgium for folks, AND we got a TON of Sailer Jerry and Wild Turkey prizes in. It was the night to be at the Belmont, for sure!

So going into the Challenge Round, The Captain is Parking was winning the night. They have a history of blowing it in the Challenge Round, and you could clearly tell they were nervous. So, thinking they were walking into a shootout, along with The Wildcatters, C Average, the Monkeys and the Backstabbers, they only wagered Zero.

When I revealed the answers and the wagers, before I began, I told everyone that the Captain is Parking got the question right (but only they knew that they wagered zero, so it didn’t even matter). I revealed the wagers and answers of all the other teams, and then, finally, the big reveal: The Captain is Parking was the ONLY team to get the last question right — so despite wagering zero, THEY WON!

It was whisper-quiet in the Space Room on Wednesday for our “I Love the Library” theme. Alright, maybe not that quiet — or quiet at all — but it was a bar full of nerds who love their book learning.

Eight teams in all were in the house to battle for the big pot. It was nice to have newbies like Plotnick there to spice things up, and See You Leder Hosen returned for another week of quiz awesomeness. Good on ya!

The Challenge Round was full up with regulars (Those Meddling Kids), regulars-in-the-making (Thistle And Shamrock), and now-and-again-players (Schadenfreude) making the finals a toss up. But in the end it was Those Meddling Kids, perhaps powered by an imported librarian, who took home the top prize. Let’s see what that does to the standings… the Cupcakes, who came out to an early lead this season have slipped these last two weeks, opening up a gap for Those Meddling Kids. But there is still plenty of time to go. Let’s see what happens next!

Lots of fun teams were ready to word wrestle tonight!! We took off into bingo and ¿Donde la Biblioteca? snatched the bingo bonus points and an early lead. Librarians Do It at 613.96 tied with Yahtzee! for 2^nd place, trailing only by 3 points! To Be Determined was behind them with LowCal Calzone Zones and My Wife Can’t Wrestle But You Should See Her Box tied leaving Buzzkill in last place.

A to Z was a pretty fun round! ¿Donde la Biblioteca? remained in 1^st, but just barely as Yahtzee! moved up to 2^nd, separated by just 3 points. Librarians and TBD were tied for 3^rd now. My Wife Can’t Wrestle pulled up by just 1 answer to be ahead of LowCal, leaving Buzzkill still on the bottom.

The teams were all pretty savvy on the sexy men pics, even without being able to see their eyes. Librarians got that handout completely correct! Those Librarians must be bored with the books…they need to check out the handsome guys, apparently. Both the Librarians and ¿Donde? aced the handout about the Dewey Decimal system and this hurt all of the underlying teams. Librarians were on top of ¿Donde? by only 2 points! LowCal was in 3^rd place and excited to be so!

Librarians picked the category for the question and I gathered the wagers. The final question was posed. None of the teams had the right answer for me! With the wagers the way they were, Librarians Do It at 613.96 took 1^st place! Their friends, ¿Donde la Biblioteca?, took 2^nd while LowCal CalzoneZones took 3^rd. That was quite a shaken up night!

We all had a great time!!

Everyone certainly was quiet during most of last night’s library quiz.

Must have had some reasonably difficult questions, seeing as no one could pull off the bonus points for five questions right in round one’s 5 for 5. The books everyone brought helped their score too. It’s nice when the bonus opportunity is easy like that, isn’t it?

Who Am I can take awhile, especially when the clues stump people- or worse, they /think/ they know it but they’re just not sure and figure they’ll wait for the next clue only to realize they were right earlier.

That’s quizzes for ya. You can know things but sometimes you don’t know what you need to when you want to.

Count Chocula’s Dirty Black Jock Strap tore through the handouts again, held the lead until the final round, and defiantly wagered 0 points. Which was well enough, as everyone got the final question wrong. So Count Chocula’s Jock Strap won with 290 points!

Round two was Who Am I? last night — which is one of my favorite games, and a crowd favorite too. Something about all the teams having to deliver their answers directly to me and the risk involved in trying to score maximum points always proves exciting.

As we reached the two-hour mark (the Who Am I? round is one of the longer games), I graded the handouts and tallied the scores — and it was a trio of regulars who competed for the cash in the final question — The Old Fashioneds, Golden Snitch and Not a Banana Baton. And though it was the Old Fashioneds who eventually won, all three final teams took home some dinero. Here are the Old Fashioneds with their winnings — and the standings game trophy — which they can lay claim to for the remainder of the quarter at which point another winner will be crowned.

You know, sometimes I ask myself, “If Snooki can write a book, why can’t I?” And then I realize that I don’t have the chops. The bangs. The artificial tan. The glue-on nails. The fake eyelashes. The backing of a major media conglomerate who is trying to make every penny it can from my fleeting, ridiculous fame. Clearly, I’ve got my work cut out for me.

But I’m not alone! Last night, eleven teams cozied up to Shanahan’s to make their stab at fame (fake tans, eyelashes, and all other things) by winning our Library-themed pub quiz. But like they say in Highlander and in the library men’s room — “There can be only one!”

Three teams duked it out in the Challenge Round, first-place through four rounds Stumbling Drunks, Off Nightly, and librarian-staffed “That’s What She Said.” Who would win!? The Librarian, of course, right? No… The Stumbling Drunks pulled off the upset, flipping card catalogs over on their way to victory.

But, after a week hiatus from the big show, this quiz show saw the triumphant return of the Divas to reclaim their belt and their turf. After a thrilling first round of Bingo our team of steam punks looked like the formidable foe, but it was terrible moves that swung the tide of fortune. While some people were too busy reading fine and excellent novels, others decided to take in cinematic failures that made me cringe to remember. Some things are just best left swept under the rug. Like every John Travolta movie after Pulp Fiction and anything that has-starring Nicholas Cage-in its tag line. Run people and do not give a cent to these people. Pay your library fines, instead.

Anyway, there was a definite fine to be given out and dirty looks to be thrown around when the Diva’s captured their second title in three weeks. The library is a sanctuary, but for one night the Diva’s let loose and gave everyone the High C, Stiffler style, and nobody was able to shush them down. Happy Quizzing!!!!

Party at the Brit!!!

After the handouts showed our players knew a little more about proverbs than current books, HIP, Rain and Unforgettable Fire reached the challenge round. In a Price Is Right-style challenge round, the teams had to pick the year that the cirst circulation library was created in the US. Rain was not only the only team not to overshoot the year, but also was just 11 years off; winning the title in just the second Pub Quiz for the team!
