Bar Bets and Bad Accents (Belmont Inn)

The famous Irish playwright Samuel Beckett summarized yesterday’s Pub Quiz in two words better than I ever will in 200 (though I’ll endeavor to try). “Fail better,” he wrote, and scads of you certainly did just that tonight.

For proof, I’ll begin with the end: Not one team managed to answer the Challenge Round question correctly, with made the finals an exercise in abject failure. So, how do you ‘fail better?’ You do so by out-wagering your opponents, which Get Your Ass to Mars did adeptly, rocketing from fourth place to beat the rest of the pack by more than 402 points! Well played…

Other high points go to the myriad toasts and songs that went over the mic for our weekly bonus point opportunity. There was one or two impressive Irish brogues tossed in there for affect (as well as a few Hobbit-sounding accents).

The highlight of the night, however, goes to Paddy McFrontbutt, who after two years of toiling through the Bingo Round FINALLY scored their FIRST Bingo bonus — and promptly let the WHOLE BAR KNOW IT. I don’t think opposing teams have ever been so happy to see someone else score the bingo, as the team got up and let out a raucous celebratory yell. Unfortunately, they couldn’t carry the magic through the following rounds, but there’s always hope that next time, they will fail better.
