It was a cold rainy night in North Portland. Many new faces blew into the North End brewery. Many neighborhood locals that had never quizzed before, yet came out to throw their cash into the game and give it a go. We even had a Trivia Jockey from another trivia outfit in town stop by to check out the action. In addition to the Trivia Jock and the NoPo locals, we had a team of Iraq vets who were quite the rowdy bunch known as The Gun Runners. Gun Runners were in 4th place after the first round, then, due to selections like Damn Yankees and Blink 182 in our Name that Tune round they rocketed into first place after round 2. They also sang along to Damn Yankees and Blink 182 with some mad fist pumping, as well as taking some time to argue with me about the validity of my answers. The truest sign of a trivia nerd-your incessant need to yell at your Quizmaster when you think you’re right, or more right than you (the quizmaster) are.
After round two and the yelling and singing of Damn Yankees died down, the handout round seemed to push folks into a mass scramble. We had the fourth place team jump into first, and the first place team (aforementioned Damn Yankee lovers) slip down into 5th place. I love it when we have a good last round twist. Makes for much more fun behind the scenes. After the final question was out, it was clear that it would all come down to the wagers, as no one could give me the 7th rated television program from ABC in the years 1996-1998. Lame asses. What kind of quizzers do you claim to be? Sheesh.
In the end, it was not the bad-ass Gun Runners, nor the newbs from the neighborhood, nor the Trivia Jock that took home the winning pot of $59, nay, it was a little team that rode the rainy, windy bridgey connections from Vancouver that claimed glory.
Thus, I give you Fairfax, from Vancouver, our winners. And yep, only two on the team. Wtg Fairfax!
