It was that kind of night at Biddy McGraw’s on Tuesday. A big crowd, including the normal cast of regular teams, but also a few new teams that had no problem finding their groove and setting the pace.
I’m not sure what it says about teams when they are stumped by questions about “Fools”. Is it maybe that it’s hard for them to relate to something so idiotic, so dumb, so beneath them? I don’t know. But I know that each team had a good deal of difficulty with one round or another, and in the end that’s just what one team needed.
Wine for Breakfast started out strong. A new team (that included a Ph.D. in history from this QuizMaster’s former home, Madison, WI) they could attribute their success to beginner’s luck, but they led from the first round, pouring on Bingo! bonus points and never letting up. Until the end. (When, in an all too foolish unfolding of events, a history question proved to be their undoing. Oh, the irony.)
Borg9 trailed throughout the evening, but never by much. They were third going into the Final Challenge Round, behind Wine and Rake of Blood. And sometimes that’s all it takes.
Call it experience winning out, call it dumb luck, call it a fool’s game, call it what you will, but Borg9 had the luxury of having to go for it all at the end.
And when you end up being the only team that knows the answer, that pays off. And in the case of night spenting quizzing with Pub Quiz USA, it pays off in cash.
