Last night in Vancouver, what started as a mild-mannered Pub Quiz, ended up as an every-team-for-itself free-for-all. It was a perfect storm of masterful quizzery, incredibly adept playing, great questions, and the first ever implementation of The Shanahan’s Streakies. Before I break it down, I should point out that last night was the first time Pub Quizzers were able to be my DJ by using their iPhone/iPod Touch. Okay, so here’s what happened: The top three teams (out of 9) were to make it into the Challenge Round. This is what the scores looked like after four rounds of play:

1. Hough Heroes — 273
2. They Fucking Rock — 266
3. (Tie) Confucious Says — 227
3. (Tie) Chud — 227
4. Dyslexic Smart Fellers — 225 (With 10 Streakie Points Available)
5. Burning Betties — 218 (With 10 Streakie Points Available)

So because of the tie, four teams were already eligible to play in the Challenge Round, but GET THIS: CHUD LEFT! That’s right! They didn’t wait around for the scores, payed their tab, and hit the road before the end of the game. Now not only is this a major quiz faux pas (Just ask Belmont’s Team YMBP), but at Shanahan’s, the awesome owners Dave and Nate tend to give out $10 gift cards at the end of the night to teams that didn’t win any cash. Why would you leave that behind!?

Okay, so that makes three teams in the Challenge Round, right? Well, wrong. The Dyslexic Smart Fellers opted to use their Streakie Points to vault themselves into the Challenge Round, but the Burning Betties opted to save their points for another time. That means the Challenge Round actually looked like this:

2. They Fucking Rock — 266
3. (Tie) Confucious Says — 227
3. (Tie) Dyslexic Smart Fellers — 227

Then, Hough (HOW-K,) Heroes chose the category (Cesar Chavez) and I read the question. The wagers were very strategic and well played. Hough Heroes wagered 6 points, TFR bet 7 points, as did Confucius Says, and the Smart Fellers went all in. TFR was the ONLY team to get the question right, so they actually ended up in first, Hough Heroes still landed in the cash in second place, and Confucius got nothing but a big thumbs up in third. Smart Fellers are now back to scratch on the Streakie Points, but nothing ventured, nothing gained — right?
