Bloody good times

Yep, it was a bloody good time indeed. Seeing as how we had a NEW winning team this week. That’s right “Angel’s Ladies” (It’s a Vegas reference to a whore house, btw) took the big winner take all pot tonight. We made our way through mushrooms and Japanese menus and just a little crime drama with some help from the bar tonight. The bar team was in SECOND place at the end of the first round! That’s saying something. AND we had not a single Bingo ring out loud for all to hear tonight. None. Which meant that it really was all up for grabs with anyone playing the game. The scores went around a bit from one to the other team, and after round two finished, we had a little game of finding evidence. I made up a tray of random bar items, and showed it to everyone for one minute. I then asked everyone to tell me what they had seen on the tray. Once all the answers were in, I then took away three items and asked them to tell me what was missing. Even in the bar cavorting drink challenged state, many of you still did well. Imagine me patting you on the back now. <pats> there you go. Nice job.

The winning team tonight was Angel’s Ladies, so next week, I shall announce them as “This week’s reigning champions….” AND I’m going to let them pick a song for the round two outtro. Any song that they want. As a new added incentive at CC Slaughter’s on Monday, you can pick that outtro song. But only on the week following your victory.

Here’s tonight’s big winners : Angels Ladies! (and their teammate Ms. Bloody Mary)

THank you Miss Polly for making a somewhat off quiz rock. I loved watching people get smashed in pursuit of points – and good knows they needed them because it was the hardest quiz I’ve ever attended, featuring the lowest scoring bingo in the history of bingo! You know me – I don’t really need a theme to have a good time, but still it was strange to watch the theme utterly disappear in the second round – to be replaced by strange Japanese trivia! Ha! Still, CC Slaughters continues to be the highlight of the quiz week – truly the one venue where competition takes back seat to camaraderie, drinking and good peeps. And it’s so much FUN to have you unplugged and uncensored. Word to big bird – this is the funnest night in town.

Okay, I am going to comment on a few things as to the level of writing for the Monday games the last couple of weeks.

Frankly its been dreadful. This Monday we had FOUR questions about Japanese cooking, three about mushrooms (yes mushrooms..and one of them was completely wrong) and two other questions about French cooking. All while having an A to Z round that didn’t have a single question to do with stated theme of the evening. (Yep, 26 questions without a single “creepy crime show” query.)

I dont know if the writer of the quiz just finished a community college class about international cuisine, but to have one fifth of the questions in a quiz about toadstools, sous chefs and sushi is just plain laziness on the writers part. I would worry that the general writing levels on Pubquiz is dropping, except I have not noticed any problems with the Wednesday quiz I have also attended the last two weeks. This Monday there was not a single science question in the entire quiz…nor a single history question. Nor a single geography question. One lone question about literature. How is that even possible, to write a trivia quiz without anything from these broad categories? (Oh but the various incredibly obscure Japanese food questions…we had plenty of those. I am still shaking my head on that.)

I think that Polly is great, (Although she really should limit the number of bonus points a team can get from buying drinks…maybe one per player per team?) and she is actually the reason we have gone back the last couple of weeks. But I can tell you this quite clearly, if this upcoming Mondays quiz is as poorly written and one dimensional as the last couple of weeks, no amount of Polly’s charm will bring us back. (Sorry Polly, I will still like you though..promise.)

In short, whoever writes the Monday quiz needs to take a little more time doing so. They need to get out of their comfort zone and expand where they get questions from. They need to learn the difference between trivia, and minutia. Trivia is facts that people can learn and know as long as they have some understanding of the subject. Minutia is tiny, insignificant things that no one would know unless they happened to be writing a quiz and were just trying to come up with things to stump the people playing. Anyone can create questions that no one in the world would rightfully know…its just bad quiz writing when this happens not just once or twice in a game…but ten to twenty times.

I have been playing Pubquiz for over a year now, once or twice a week, every week. Mondays CC Slaughters quiz was the worst written one I have ever been a part of. I hate to be so brutal, but it has to be said. The writer needs to work harder, and become better at his or her job, or just let this particular career path go.

We shall see on Monday. Hopefully the right people see this and I can once again enjoy my Monday nights out. Otherwise, there is plenty of other entertainment in the greater Portland area.

I agree. The focus was too narrow and was filled with minutia not trivia. The point of going to pub quiz is to have fun, not to spend two hours bored and annoyed by the quiz. Polly is a good quiz master, but the quiz was so lame this week she had to invent a new game mid-quiz to keep things going.
Also, what was with the half-dozen semi-obscure music questions? I thought the theme was creepy crime? Why have a theme at all if you’re not going to use it? You need to hire new writers with a broader base of knowledge if you want to keep your customers (they would be the people who make a point of going to the quizzes). You need new writers.

Thanks for all the feedback, the writers are reading this, and this weeks Monday night quiz promises to be better~ Hope you all come back for another try, I’ll do my best, and will make sure we”re thematic and FUN tonight! No Japanese food, I promise!
(Or mushrooms for at least 3 weeks)
