Hard to believe it, but there’s only ONE WEEK TO GO in our first ever Belmont Steak Standings. I’m polishing up the lovely trophy provided by the Widmer Brothers. And right now it seems that only two teams are in it to win it, but there’s a LOT of spoilers out there. I’d call them ‘also-rans’ but if I gave them that much disrespect they’d run me right out of the bar. In fact, many teams at last night’s Blue-themed showdown are already looking forward to the NEXT season of The Belmont Steak. Smart thinking, actually. It’s the Apple Computer strategy — you don’t have to be first to the market to be the best.
Still, Beige Food was first, best, and dominant last night, running the 15-team quiz wire-to-wire. “The Wildcatters are back!” proclaimed that bunch of smarties when they signed in, and back they were with a vengence, but not enough earn the top score after four rounds or to win the Challenge Round. They dropped from second to fifth after wagering wildly, while Strokus Arcana leapt ahead on the strength of their wager landing the #2 spot for themselves. No Mouth Monkeys (or rather the Blue Mouth Monkeys for the theme and the weather) came in third, and the Ice Holes pulled up a zero to help the Wildcatters round out the top five.
The Monkeys can still pull this thing off! Beige Food has a three point lead, and will get one point just for showing up, which means in order for the Monkeys to win the Steak, they will need to come in first and make sure that Beige Food doesn’t get into the Challenge Round. That’s a tall order but it will certainly be an interesting one to watch. Come on down to the Belmont next week and be a part of history.
