Pub Quiz USA

Today I am Thankful for

An awesome place like CC Slaughter’s to host a quiz. The crowds may be somewhat lighter, the boys may not know all the sports questions, and the Bar Team may, in fact, gather some help from the random drinker as they pass through Monday night Quiz town, but I gotta tell you boys and girls, it’s the funnest bestest Pub Quiz a girl could have. “It’s like family” someone said to me on the street tonight as they were coming into the quiz. And this, yes, I have to agree with. It’s like family you WANT to spend time with on the holidays. That family that you create and nurture, not the nut-jobs that just show up to grab some cash and argue with you about points recipes.

Even with the smaller crowds we have a damn good time at CC Slaughters each and every Monday night, right around 7 pm. Sometimes we start a little late, sometimes we wait for people if they are stuck in traffic *ahem*. Sometimes we have a few rounds of really strong drinks and get a little tipsy and mouthy on the microphone. Sometimes we just makes jokes and fly airplanes. We’ve even been known to have Pirate standing contests for points. If you’ve never been to a smaller quiz, one of the more intimate affairs that host less than 30 people, you really should check them out. I can’t speak for the other QM’s out there in Pub Quiz Land, but for me, those little quizzes, man, they rock. You get a chance to talk back when people throw pronunciations and answers at you. You get a chance to relax, and enjoy the time spent with the loayl quizzers and the bar staff. Those folks that you’ve spent a day each and every week with for the last few years. It’s great when you’ve been quizzing somewhere for so long that you walk in and you can call eveyrone at the bar by their real name, not just their team name. You recognize quizzers, by name and you have real conversations before and after the quiz. Like this.

Don’t get me wrong, I love me some fans. I mean, there’s nothing quite like holding a microphone in front of over a hundred people and being a bitch Quizmaster, but still, there’s something quaint and beautiful about holding a microphone and being a bitch Quizmaster with a bunch of people that are like family. So this week, as you give thanks with those related by blood, stop for a moment at your quizzes to wax poetically about those we are only related to trivally. I have three nights this week to be Thankful for all of you, my dear Pub Quizzers. So you better make it good for me. Come out and see me. I’m all fired up in the wrath warmth of the season and a few martini’s from the bar. I can’t wait till CC’s busts out the fireplace and the stag statues up on the stage. This year, I swear, we’re going to quiz around that son of a bitch while we drink eggnogs laden with rum and bust out in Christmas carols. Non-denominational of course, so as not to offend.

Next time you wanna go where the Quizmaster knows your name, and your game, come to CC’s. We’ll be there.

I leave you with a timeless quote from the master of trivial knowledge, Mr. Cliff Clavin explaining the ‘Buffalo Theory’ of eugenics to his buddy Norm:

“Well ya see, Norm, it’s like this. A herd of buffalo can only move as fast as the slowest buffalo. So when the herd is hunted, it is the slowest and weakest ones at the back that are killed first. This natural selection is good for the herd as a whole, because the general speed and health of the whole group keeps improving by the regular killing of the weakest members.

The human brain works that way too. It only operates as fast as the slowest brain cells. Excessive intake of alcohol, as we know, kills brain cells. But naturally, it attacks the slowest and weakest brain cells first. So, regular consumption of beer eliminates the weaker brain cells, making the brain a faster and more efficient machine. That’s why you always feel smarter after! a few beers.”

Happy Thanksgiving!

Polly is right. CC’s is like family, only better. I love this place. I love my quizzes. And I love my Quizmaster. Happy Thanksgiving!
