They won using the Konami cheat code!

Up Up Down Down Left Right Left Right B A Start. That was the team name of the winners last night at the Park Lanes Paradise Lounge. We had a good laugh when we realized they used the Contra 99 lives cheat code to win the game. Hillarity ensued.

In second place last night were Geeks United (now with 100% more geek!) with their 4-person squad. Usually they bring in just the two of them, but this week paid off to bring some new blood! Special thanks for their team for bringing in a vintage Colecovision AND a vintage Intellivision. I assume they don’t work anymore, but how awesome would it be if they did? I didn’t ask. Though after about 5 minutes playing the crappy games that passed for “good” in the 80′s, I guess I’d get bored anyway. Still, something about a working Coleco just feels RIGHT.

We talked about that documentary about old-school videogame championships, so I thought I’d give you a link. I shit you not, the documentary has the cast of a Hollywood flick. It has the everyman, who is a hard working engineer, using his math skills and his obsessive-compulsive disorder to play Donkey Kong thousands of times. It has the douche-bag nemesis, who seems to cheat to beat the everyman hero of the story. It even has all sorts of nerdy characters, like the owner and “ref” of Twin Galaxies, whose sole claim to fame is scorekeeper for pro arcade gamers. It was a really well done documentary, and if you want a trip down arcade memory lane, I recommend it for sure. The reviews alone merit a gander.

I’m still working the kinks out on the new week-to-week scoring system, so don’t fret! I haven’t forgotten. The basics, if I didn’t make it clear, is that every time you come to the pub quiz, you get 1-4 points, depending on how you placed that night, and I keep a running tally for bragging rights, a (hopefully) ridiculous looking trophy good for 5 bonus points at each quiz, and some other stuff if I can work it out. It’s mostly for fun and bragging rights, and you can never have enough of that, I always say.

And here it is, your Zelda moment of zen. (If you’ve ever played Legend of Zelda, WATCH THIS VIDEO SERIES!) (Rated R for language and adult situations) (For real, watch it, I’ve never laughed so hard in my life)
