Apparently Spitzer swallows is a space joke – Big Time Brewing Co 10/7/09

I didn’t get the joke. I kinda remembered that Spitzer was a space telescope from a question a few weeks ago, but oh well. That was just an alterante team name, didn’t make the final cut, I guess because un-space savvy dudes like me wouldn’t appreciate it. That joke was a few parsecs over my head. Get it, parsecs, a measure of space distance used in Star Wars? See, I’m down with space. And, please let me know your take on the debate: Was that an error when Han Solo referred to making the 18 parsec Kessel Run in only 12 parsecs trying to refer to the Falcon’s speed, or was he talking about his piloting skills in finding a shortcut? Other than Star Wars, this quizmaster is admittedly not super space savvy. I went many years not believing in outer space. I am still up in the air on it. What pretty much convinced me was the Weather Channel. That proved satellites existed, and if there are satellites, then there must be space. But then a conspiratorial side of me says that enough ground based observations of the weather would allow you to construct a “satellite” image from below.

Oh yeah, there was a pub quiz tonight too! Big props to our actual former Space Camp camper for bringing his picture and t-shirt, that was very cool. Tonight was a great crowd, filling Big Time with 50 people on 10 teams. We had some new team like Yay, Tennis!!, 6′s and 7′s, and Team Cesar, as well as an offshoot of Team Big Time known as Team Small Time. The Bingo round saw the Buzzed Aldrin’s jump out to a commanding lead, followed by Uranus is so big it has 27 Moons. Try saying that name all night! Oh, you can? Well try out Megan Fox’s Black Hole (formerly known as Megan Fox’s Hot Thumb). That was even longer. But big props for keeping your team name topical, as well as suggestive. The Muffcakes were back, but unfortunately could not crack the Top 5 as we went to the expanded Final Challenge Round because of our big crowd. Megan Fox’s Black Hole was barely edged out of contention by This one time, at Space Camp… as they excelled on the handouts to leap into the fray for championship contention. Team Big Time scored big by being the only team to correctly answer the final challenge question and doubling their points to win it going away, shocking the Buzzed Aldrin’s, who carried a big lead into the final challenge round.

Congrats to Team Big Time and all of tonight’s quizzers on a great game. See you next week! Cheers, Kurt
