Biddy’s 8.25.2009

Biddy’s, how I will miss thee. Oh well, tis better to have quizzed and lost, than never to have quizzed at all… (I wonder if Schadenfreude is thinking that after last night?)

Terrible injustice reigned last night – or fairy tale justice perhaps – the youngest brother saved the princess, the smallest knight won the battle, the daughter with the horrible boil married the king! Go Hawks came in last place just one week ago, and steadily worked to the top last night, coming in third for the final round. Then, they wagered almost nothing and kicked everyone else’s asses even though they (and every other team) missed the almost impossible final question! Did I mention it was the biggest pot we’ve had in a while? Go Hawks! (Go Go Hawks?) I love a good come from behind victory!

To do something a little different this week, I thought that I would use my prowess in the fairy tale field to suggest some delightful fairy books that might please the discerning eye:

A.S. Byatt – Little Black Book of Stories and The Djinn in the Nightengale’s Eye (Not for children!)

Henry Glassie – Irish Folk Tales

Nancy Arrowsmith – A Field Guide to the Little People

And if you can get your hands on a copy: Stories Founded on English History (Which has no author, but rather was “Published under the direction of the general literature committee” sometime before 1911).

Look for more in my blog on Thursday!

Cheers,

Leandra
