Portland’s Got Talent! ™

So, few people sang this week at Nepo42, but oh man they were good. One guy sang an oldschool song of MJ’s and was actually working the crowd! They knew the words, and when he pointed the mic at them, they were right there and didn’t miss a beat with the chorus. It’s was freaking awesome. Major props, man!

Tonight was an upset, with one of the hardest challenge questions I’ve ever seen. Not only did teams have to name all 5 living brothers of Michael Jackson, but put them in order in terms of age. Yikes! No teams were able to achieve the feat, so the two money spots went to the teams that bet the least! It was a flippy-floppy of epic proportions.

This week was awesome. We had singing, we had people moonwalking to the bathroom or back to their tables, it was so fun every venue. People were SURE they had had enough of Michael, what with the month-long media coverage of everything, including the “breaking news” that Michaels remains were, in fact, in a cemetary. Wow. Get that media network a string of pulitzers please. :P

But, people weren’t as tired of him as they thought – not only were they able to put the recent smothering of MJ info to use answering questions about his life, but they really dug the audio clips, name that tune, and little known facts about the Jacksons. I love that Janet was a zombie dancer in Thriller. It’s a weird thing, but every time I hear a Michael Jackson song, after about a year at a time without hearing one, I think to myself, “Self, that guy really did have some really, really good songs.”

Like The Beatles, and Elvis before them, it might just come down to having a good, unique sound, along with excellent timing and a rebellious spirit. Perhaps it was just because he was merely “good” in a sea of mediocre bands. But maybe, just maybe, he became the king of pop because he had a destiny to fulfill. Perhaps we will never know, since it seems his life was cut short from a lost childhood. Some may remember his bad moments or how he turned into a reclusive Howard-Hughes type at the end, but me? I’ll always remember the guy who overcame an abusive father and overbearing media attention and gave us a revolution of sick beats.
